დღე 1. 23 ოქტომბერი, შაბათი

საქართველოში მიმავალი ყველა სტუმრის მსგავსად BMI თვითმფრინავით გვიან ღამით ჩავფრინდით თბილისის აეროპორტში და პასპოტის კონტროლის გავლის შემდგომ ჩვენი ქართველი მეგობრების კომპანიაში აღმოვჩნდით. აეროპორტში დაგხვდნენ მადონა ტყეშელაშვილი, მარიკა მეგრელიშვილი, ნანა ხეცურიანი და ნიკა ოყრეშიძე. ვიზიტს არ შეიძლებოდა უკეთესი დასაწყისი ჰქონოდა.

ნანა და ნიკა მალე დაგვემშვიდობნენ გადაუდებელი სამსახურეობრივი მოვალეობის გამო, მაგრამ მადონამ და მარიკამ შემოგვთავაზეს ღამის თბილისის დათვალიერება. ამგვარად, გზად მიღებული გადაწყვეტილების მიუხედავად, რომ ადრიანად დაგვეძინა ჩვენც დიდი მონდომებითა და ხალისით გავყევით მათ. თბილი ღამე იყო, თავზე ქალაქის გასხივოსნებული ტაძარი დაგვყურებდა და ჩვენ ვსვამდით მეგობრობის სადღეგრძელოს ღამის 2 საათამდე. ეს პირველი სასმისი იყო იმ მრავალთა შორის, რომელიც მომდევნო კვირის მანძილზე წარმოვსთქვით.

ჩვენ მოვეწყვეთ თბილისის სასტუმროში და საუზმის შემდეგ ისევ მარიკასა და მადონას შევხვდით, რომლებმაც სხვა ქუთაისელი მეგობრების სანდო ხელში დაგვტოვეს და დროებით დაგვემშვიდობნენ. ამჯერად, ჩვენი მასპინძლები ქუთაისელი ექიმები ბატონები ზაზა ლომინაძე, მამუკა ჯიქია და მირიან ჭეიშვილი იყვნენ. ისინი სტუმრობდნენ ნიუპორტს 2008 წელს. ჩვენი ბარგი მანქანებში მოათავსეს და მამუკას ქალიშვილთან ნათიასთან და ზაზას ცოლის ძმიშვილ მარიამთან ერთად (რომლებიც ინგლისურ ენაზე კარგად საუბრობდნენ და, ისედაც სასიამოვნო განწყობას ქმნიდნენ) გამოვეშურეთ ქუთაისისაკენ.

ჩვენი პირველი შესვენება იყო მცხეთაში, სადაც მოვინახულეთ უძველესი ტაძარი და მოვიხიბლეთ იმ ცვლილებებით, რაც დაგვხვდა ტაძრის მიმდებარე ტერიტორიასა და მთლიანად ქალაქში. ხელთნაკეთი დახლების დათვალიერების შემდგომ (სადაც გვაჩუქეს ტრადიციული ქუდები) წავედით ახლადგახსნილ რესტორანში მტკვრის სანაპიროზე და დავაგემოვნეთ მრავალფეროვანი კერძები, ძირითადად ახლად დაჭერილი თევზები.

თბილისსა და გორს შორის არსებული გზის მონაკვეთი განახლებულია და საკმაოდ სწრაფად წავედით წინ. გორის მახლობლად კი ვნახეთ ლტოლვილთა ახალი დასახლება, რომლებიც რუსული ოკუპაციის შედეგად ორი წლის წინ იძულებით გადმოასახლეს.

შემდგომ გადავკვეთეთ დროებითი ფოლადის ხიდი, დამზადებული ჩეპსტოუში და გალვანიზებული (მოთუთიებული) ნიუპორტში შპს ,,მაბეი ბრიჯის'' მიერ. ძველი ხიდი რუსული დაბომბვის დროს განადგურდა. უცნაურია, ხიდიც ჩვენსავით ნიუპორტიდან იყო.

თრიალეთის უღელტეხილზე გვირაბში შესაკეთებელი სამუშაოები მიმდინარეობდა და დახურული იყო. ამიტომ ჩვენ შემოვლითი გზით წამოვედით, რამაც გაზარდა გზის ხანგრძლივობა, მაგრამ მთების ულამაზესი ხედების ფონზე ჩვენი მგზავრობა კიდევ უფრო სასიამოვნო გახადა.

შუადღისას ქუთაისში ჩამოსულებს სასტუმრო ,,ბაგრატთან" თაიგულებით დამშვენებული მეგობართა დიდი გუნდი დაგვხვდა პროფესორ მადონა მეგრელიშვილის ხელმძღვანელობით. ხანგრძლივი მოკითხვების შემდეგ მოკლე შესვენების ნება მოგვეცა.

სასტუმრო ,,ბაგრატი'' ერთ-ერთი იმ უზარმაზარი სარეკონსტრუქციო პროგრამის შედეგია, რომელიც ქალაქში წარმატებით ხორციელდება. მეგობრული მომსახურე პერსონალისა და ბრწყინვალე აღჭურვილობით აღნიშნული სასტუმრო სათანადოდ მასპინძლობს მომრავლებულ ტურისტებსა და ბიზნესმენებს, რომლებიც ასე გახშირდა ქუთაისსა და მთელს იმერეთის რეგიონში. აღსანიშნავია, რომ კიდევ ერთი ახალი 200 საწოლიანი სასტუმროს მშენებლობა ინტენსიურად მიმდინარეობს ქალაქში.

მოგვიანებით, იმავე საღამოს ქუთაისი ნიუპორტის საერთაშორისო ასოციაციის წევრებმა ვახშმად ლიტერატურულ კაფეში მიგვიწვიეს. მაგიდები მთელს დარბაზში იყო განლაგებული, ამიტომ მონაცვლეობით ყველასთან მივდიოდით, რათა ჩვენს ყველა მეგობარს გავსაუბრებოდით. ჩვენ ბევრი რამ გვქონდა ერთმანეთისთვის მოსაყოლი და დიალოგიც თავისუფლად მიმდინარეობდა იქ მყოფ მასწავლებელთა ბრწყინვალე ინგლისურის წყალობით.

ქ-ნ მადონას ქუთაისელ სოროპტიმისტთა წარმომადგენლებიც ჰყავდა მოწვეული. ქ-ნები როზმარი და სონია დიდად ნასიამოვნები დარჩნენ მათთან საუბრით. მეგობრული კავშირი უკვე დამყარებულია ნიუპორტელ და ქუთაისელ სოროპტიმისტებს შორის. ვიმედოვნებთ, რომ ამ ურთიერთობას აღნიშნული საღამო კიდევ უფრო განამტკიცებს.

DAY 1. Saturday 23 October.

Like all visitors to Georgia flying with BMI, we arrived in Tbilisi airport just after midnight and, once through passport control, we were warmly welcomed by our friends Madonna Tkeshelashvili, Marika Megrelishvili, Nana Khetsuriani and Nick Okreshidze. The visit couldn’t have had a better start.

Nana and Nick soon waved goodbye as both were due to start work a few hours later but Madonna (who we will refer to as Madona T in this report to avoid confusion with Madonna Megrelishvili) and Marika were keen to show us Tbilisi’s nightlife so, despite the decision taken en route to seek an `early` night’s sleep, we were willingly whisked off to the restaurant quarter and there, on a warm night and beneath the city’s floodlit castle, we shared snacks and drank toasts to `friendship` until after two o’ clock, the first of many such toasts made during the following week.

We had booked ourselves into a Tbilisi hotel and after breakfast were met first by Marika and Madona T and then by the three doctors we had the pleasure to meet when they visited Newport in 2008 - Dr Zaza Lominadze, Dr Mamuka Jikia and Dr Mirian Cheishvili. They loaded our luggage into two cars and we bid a temporary goodbye to Marika and Madonna T. Then, accompanied by Mamuka’s daughter, Natia, and Zaza’s niece Mariami (both good English speakers and delightful company), we all set off for Kutaisi.

Our first stop was Mtskheta where we visited the ancient cathedral and were impressed by all the renovations being undertaken in the cathedral grounds and surrounding village. After admiring the craft stalls (where we were bought traditional hats), we drove to a recently opened restaurant where we sat at a table on the banks of the River Mtkvari and ate a range of delicious dishes consisting mainly of freshly caught fish.

The section of motorway between Tbilisi and Gori is new and we made rapid progress. As we neared the outskirts of Gori we could see the new housing estates built to accommodate the refugees displaced as a result of the Russian invasion two years ago.

Here we crossed the temporary steel river bridge fabricated in Chepstow and galvanised in Newport by Mabey Bridge Ltd to replace the one destroyed by Russian bombing – a strange feeling to think that the bridge, too, came from Newport!

The road tunnel under the Trialeti Ridge is presently closed for repairs so we took the mountain route which added to the length of the journey but made it even more attractive.

When, in mid afternoon, we arrived at Kutaisi’s new Hotel Bagrati we were very warmly welcomed by a large gathering of friends led by Professor Madonna Megrelishvili and after many hugs and the presentation of flowers we were allowed a brief rest. The Hotel Bagrati is another result of the huge construction programme currently taking place in the city. With friendly staff and excellent facilities, we were told that it will help meet the needs of the increasing number of tourists and business people who are now visiting Kutaisi and Imereti and that another 200 bed hotel is presently being built.

Later that evening we were taken for dinner at the stylish Literary Café and during the meal we had our first opportunity to meet the many members of the Kutaisi Newport International Association who teach English at the University or the English Language Centre. As everyone was seated at tables dotted around the restaurant we moved from table to table to chat to as many of our friends as possible. We had much to talk about and conversation flowed freely - helped by the fact that all the teachers speak perfect English.

Madonna had invited members of the Kutaisi Branch of the Soroptimists to join us for the evening and Sonia and Rosemary enjoyed talking to them. Friendly contacts have already been made between the Soroptimists in Newport and Kutaisi and we hope the evening will help further strengthen the link.

ქუთაისში ყოფნის პირველივე დღე განსაკუთრებული იყო. ქ-ნ მადონას, ბ-ნების ზაზა ლომინაძის, მამუკა ჯიქიასა და მირიან ჭეიშვილის, ასევე ახალგაზრდების მარიამის, ნათიას, ბ-ნ მირიანის ქალიშვილის ანასა და სასიამოვნო ახალგაზრდა თარჯიმნის ირინა კობახიძის თანხლებით ვანისაკენ ავიღეთ გეზი. მოვინახულეთ ვანის მუზეუმი და არქეოლოგიური გათხრები.

ვანი, რომელიც კოლხური ცივილიზაციის დედაქალაქი გახლდათ, და რომლის აყვავების ხანა ჩვ.წ.-მდე VIII-I საუკუნეებს მოიცავს, არის ერთ-ერთი ყველაზე შთამბეჭდავი არქეოლოგიური სანახაობა ევროპაში. ვანის მერთან წარდგენის შემდეგ, რომელიც იმერეთის ვიცე გუბერნატორის, გიგა შუშანიას დახმარებით შედგა, მუზეუმი თავად დირექტორმა დაგვათვალიერებინა. ჩვენდა გასახარად მიგვიწვიეს სპეციალურ საცავში, სადაც განსაკუთრებით მნიშვნელოვანი ექსპონატები ინახება. ჩვენ საშუალება მოგვეცა გვენახა შესანიშნავი ოქროს სამკაულები, რომლებიც საგანგებოდ არის დაცული. შემდეგ კი ჩვენი ტურნე გაგრძელდა.

ამჯერად, ბ-მა ზაზამ ჭკვიანურად მოაწყო “Leg-pull”-ი, როცა ბ-ნი დერეკი ჩართო ,,არქეოლოგიურ გათხრებში”. ბარით შეიარაღებულმა, სთხოვა დერეკს აერჩია ნიბისმიერი ადგილი სიძველეთა აღმოსაჩენად. ქალაქ ვანის მერის, ჩვენი მეგობრების, ადგილობრივი არქეოლოგებისა და ოპერატორის თანხლებით მან მიიწვია დერეკი დასახმარებლად. და ბ-ნი დერეკ ბატლერი ,,სენსაციური აღმოჩენის” ავტორი გახდა, რადგან მან მიაკვლია ყუთს, რომელშიც (სურპრიზი!) ოქროს კოლხური ბეჭედი (რეპროდუცქია როგორც შემდეგ გაირკვა) და ვალიური დრაკონის ბროში იდო. გიგამ აღტაცებით აღნიშნა: ,,ეს ადასტურებს, რომ ველიელები ვანში 2000 წლის წინაც იმყოფებოდნენ?” – ამას მოჰყვა დიდი სიცილი და მხიარულება. ჩვენი მასპინძლების იუმორის გამორჩეული შეგრძნება ერთ-ერთი გამოვლენა იყო იმ იუმორისა, რომელიც თან სდევდა ჩვენს მთელ ვიზიტს და, რამაც ჩვენი სტუმრობა კიდევ უფრო სასიამოვნო გახადა.

ეს აღმოჩენა ავღნიშნეთ ბ-ნ ზაზა ლომინაძის მამულში ვანის მახლობლად. ბ-ნი ზაზას ოჯახმა მეზობლებითა და მეგობრებით თავი მართლაც საკუთარ სახლში გვაგრძნობინა. მათ თითოეული ჩვენთაგანი საშემოდგომო საოჯახო საქმიანობაში ჩართეს. მალე შევუდექით ყურძნის წურვას, ჩურჩხელისა და ხაჭაპურის დამზადებას – ყველაფერი კადრზეა აღბეჭდილი. ასევე დავრგეთ მუხის ხე და განსაკუთრებული ,,მეგობრობის” ვაზის მწკრივი.

ეს გახლდათ მხიარულებით სავსე რამდენიმე საათი და ნაყოფიერი ,,მუშაობის” შემდეგ სადილისთვისაც მზად ვიყავით. მაგრამ სიტყვა “lunch” ზუსტად ვერ გადმოსცემს აივანზე გაშლილ მშვენიერ ,,სუფრას”. ამინდიც შესანიშნავი იყო. გემრიელ სადილსა და ჩვენს მხიარულ მასპინძლებთან საუბარს სოფლის ლამაზი ფონი კიდევ მეტ ხიბლს სძენდა. არაჩვეულებრივ კერძებს ბ-ნ ზაზას სახლში დამზადებული ღვინო და ყურძნის წვენი ამშვენებდა. რათქმაუნდა უამრავი გულითადი სადღეგრძელო სტუმრებისა და მეგობრებისადმი აგვირგვინებდა შექმნილ განწყობას. ეს გახლდათ ქართული სტუმართმოყვარეობა ამ სიტყვის საუკეთესო მნიშვნელობით. ჩვენ ვერასოდეს შევძლებთ იმ მადლიერების სათანადოდ გამოხატვას, რასაც ბ-ნი ზაზას, მისი ოჯახისადმი და ჩვენი მეგობრებისადმი განვიცდით იმ იდეალური დღისათვის, რომელიც სამუდამოდ აღიბეჭდა ჩვენს მეხსიერებაში.

Day 2. Sunday 24 October.

On this, our first full day in Kutaisi, we were collected by Madonna, Zaza, Mamuka, and Mirian together with the youngsters Mariami and Natia and Mirian’s daughter Ann and a pleasant young translator named Irena Kobakhidze.

Our first stop was the Museum and archaeological site at Vani. Vani, capital of the Colchis civilisation which flourished from the 8th to the 1st centuries BC, is one of the most fascinating archaeological sites in Europe. After being introduced to the Mayor of Vani by our friend, Deputy Governor Giga Shushania we were taken on a tour of the Museum by the Director and, to our delight, we were invited in to the Museum’s strong room where the most magnificent artefacts found at the site, including breathtakingly beautiful gold jewellery, are safeguarded. Then we toured the site.

At this point, Zaza set up a clever `leg-pull` when he invited Derek to join him in a spot of `excavational digging`. Armed with a spade, he asked Derek to select a spot and surrounded by a crowd that included the Mayor, our friends, local archaeologists and the accompanying film cameraman, he turned over a few spadefulls of earth and invited Derek to join in. Needless to say, Derek immediately made a `sensational discovery` when he dug up a box containing (surprise!) a gold Colchis ring (reproduction as it turned out) and a Welsh dragon broach – “proving” as Giga exclaimed “that the Welsh reached Vani two thousand years ago!” Everyone collapsed with laughter! It was typical of our hosts’ great sense of fun – a characteristic that was evident throughout our visit and which made it so exceptionally enjoyable.

We then drove to the country home of Zaza, his wife Tamriko and his children outside Vani. Zaza’s family are a delight and, accompanied by their neighbours and friends, they made us feel at home - by giving us jobs! Soon we were being employed to crush grapes for winemaking, make Churchkhela and cook khachapuri - all recorded on film. We also helped plant a tree and a row of special `friendship` vines.

It was a fun-filled couple of hours and after all the `work` we were ready for lunch. But lunch doesn’t accurately describe the wonderful `suprha` set on a long table on the veranda. The weather was glorious and as we ate, chatted and laughed with our jovial hosts we could take in the unspoilt countryside around us. The food was superb and was accompanied by Zaza’s delicious homemade wine and juice and the purest of water from the family well. It was accompanied, too, by numerous heartfelt toasts to `welcome guests` and `friendship`. It was Georgian hospitality at its supreme best and we will never be able to thank Zaza and his family and friends enough for an idyllic afternoon and evening we will never forget.

დღე 3. ორშაბათი, 25 ოქტომბერი.

ეს დღე აღსავსე იყო სასიამოვნო შეხვედრებით, რომლებიც უთუოდ ბევრ სარგებელს მოუტანს ჩვენს ურთიერთობებს მომავალში. აქ აუცილებლად დიდი მადლიერებით უნდა მოვიხსენიოთ კარინო მეგრელიშვილი (დათო მეგრელიშვილის მამა), რომელიც დაუზარებლად გვემსახურებოდა თავისი მანქანით ქუთაისში მთელი ჩვენი ვიზიტის განმავლობაში.

ჩვენი პირველი შეხვედრა შედგა მერიის შენობაში იმერეთის გუბერნატორ ლაშა მაქაცარიას, ვიცე-გუბერნატორ გიგა შუშანიას, ქუთაისის მერ გიორგი თევდორაძესა და ქალაქის საკრებულოს თავჯდომარეს ამირან ხვადაგიანთან და პროფესორ მადონა მეგრელიშვილთან ერთად. გიგა და გიორგი ჩვენ უკვე მეგობრებად მიგვაჩნია, რადგან მათ ერთი თვით ადრე ნიუპორტში ვუმასპინძლეთ. თარჯიმნობას ჩვენი ძველი ქუთაისელი მეგობარი მაია ალავიძე გვიწევდა. ამდენად, შეხვედრამ გაცილებით ნაკლებად ოფიციალურ ატმოსფეროში ჩაიარა, ვიდრე ეს ამგვარ შემთხვევებში ხდება ხოლმე.

ჩვენ განვიხილეთ ასოციაციის მიერ მიღწეული წარმატებები განვლილი 20 წლის მანძილზე, ჩვენი მომავალი გეგმები და ვისაუბრეთ იმ უზარმაზარ ცვლილებებზე, რომელიც საქართველოში და უელსში ამ დროის განმავლობაში განხორციელდა. სონია წარუდგა მასპინძლებს, როგორც ნიუპორტი ქუთაისის ასოციაციის ახალი თავმჯდომარე და დერეკმაც ხელიდან არ გაუშვა შესაძლებლობა, მადლობა მოეხსენებინა მერისა და საკრებულოს თავმჯდომარისათვის მისთვის ქუთაისის საპატიო მოქალაქის წოდების მინიჭების გამო. მერიიდან გამოსულები, თარჯიმან ნათია ზვიადაძესთან ერთად გავუყევით ქუთაისის მზიან ცენტრალურ ქუჩებს გელათის სასულიერო აკადემიისკენ, გზად კი ნიუპორტის ქუჩაზე შევჩერდით, რათა ჩვენი ვიზიტისთვის სპეციალურად დამზადებული ახალი აბრა გვენახა.

გელათის სასულიერო აკადემიაში სასულიერო განთლებას საქართველოს მართლმადიდებლურ ეკლესიაში მოღვაწე პირები იღებენ. აქ პირველი შემოგვეგება ლევან ტყეშელაშვილი, რომელსაც ორიოდე წლის წინ ნიუპორტში მამა მარკ სოუდიმ და ბრაიან და დაიანა კოქსებმა უმასპინძლეს.

ჩვენ გაგვაცნეს აკადემიის ახალი რექტორი, მამა მიქაელი. მისი მისასალმებელი სიტყვის პასუხად როზმარმა გაიხსენა ის უდიდესი როლი, რომელიც ნიუპორტის სასულიერო პირებმა ითამაშეს ჩვენი ურთიერთობის პირველ ეტაპზე. საუბრისას ბევრი სხვა საკითხიც იქნა განხილული, მათ შორის უელსის მართლმადიდებლური ეკლესიის მოღვაწობა (ჩვენ გავიხსენეთ, რამდენიმე წლის წინ ნიუპორტი ქუთაისის ასოციაციის მიერ ნიუპორტში ორგანიზებული შეხვედრა მართლმადიდებლური ეკლესიის უელსის რეგიონის მეთაურთან) და ქართული ხატების სულ უფრო მზარდი რაოდენობა, რომლებიც წმ. ვოლოსის საკათედრო ტაძარს ამკობს. საუბრის დასასრულს მამა მიქაელმა იმედი გამოთქვა, რომ შეძლებს ხელი შეუწყოს ორი ქალაქის სასულიერო მეთაურებს შორის კეთილგანწყობის გაღრმავებას. შეხვედრა უფრო არაფორმალურ გარემოში გაგრძელდა აივანზე, რომელიც მდინარე რიონს გადაჰყურებს. ეს საუბარი ლევანისა და აკადემიის ინგლისური ენის მასწავლებლის, მამუკას დახმარებით მიმდინარეობდა. რაც არ უნდა უცნაურად მოგეჩვენოთ, მამუკა ინგლისურად შოტლანდიური აქცენტით საუბრობს, რადგან გარკვეული პერიოდის განმავლობაში გლაზგოში ცხოვრობდა. საინტერესოა, რამდენად საგრძნობ კვალს დაატყობს ეს აქცენტი ქართველი სასულიერო პირების ინგლისურ მეტყველებას.

ლევანი და მამუკა კიდევ ერთ შესანიშნავ თარჯიმან მაკა ჯაჯანიძესთან ერთად თან გამოგვყვნენ მოწამეთაში. ეს გახლავთ უძველესი ტაძარი, რომელიც მდინარე რიონის ღრმა ხეობას მთის წვერიდან გადმოჰყურებს და, სადაც ამჟამად აღდგენითი სამუშაოები მიმდინარეობს (კიდევ ერთი მშენებლობა). სანამ თავად ტაძრის მშვენიერებით და თვალისმომჭრელი ხედებით ვტკბებოდით, ნიუპორტის უნივერსიტეტის ახალი სტუდენტის, ანა ჭანკვეტაძის მამა და მისი და ფატი შემოგვიერთდნენ. ხალისიანი და მხიარული საუბრის შემდეგ მათ სახლში გულითადი მიპატიჟება მივიღეთ, მაგრამ სამწუხაროდ იძულებული გავხდით უარი გვეთქვა იმავე მიზეზით, რის გამოც გელათში დაგეგმილი ვიზიტი ჩაიშალა ანუ დროის სიმცირის გამო.

ჩვენ სასწრაფოდ გამოგვაქროლეს ქუთაისი ნიუპორტის საერთაშორიდო ასოციაციის ხალხით სავსე ოფისში, სადაც მაშინვე ჩავებით საუბარში ჩვენ ყველაზე ძველ მეგობრებთან ლალა კობეშავიძეს, მადლენ გიორგაძეს, ციცინო თოდუას, ქეთი მელქაძეს, ექიმ ნანა ძიძიგურს, ნუნუ ჩარკვიანს, ზეკო ხაჩიძესა და უნივერსიტეტის ბიბლიოთეკის გამგეს გიორგი ჭიჭინაძესთან. ცოტა ხანში მადონამ ჩვენი ყურადღება მოითხოვა და მორიგი მისალმების შემდეგ ქუთაისის მერს თხოვა სერტიფიკატები გადაეცა ასოციაციის იმ წევრებისათვის, რომელთაც განსაკუთრებული წვლილი შეიტანეს ჩვენი ქალაქების დამეგობრების საქმეში. რადგან იქ შეკრებილთა დიდი უმრავლესობა სწორედ ამ კატეგორიას განეკუთვნებოდა, დაჯილდოვების ცერემონიალი, ნიჭიერი ახალგაზრდა მუსიკოსების მიერ შესრულებული შესანიშნავი ინტერლუდიებით, საკმაოდ დიდ ხანს გაგრძელდა. ამგვარად გამოხატა ასოციაციამ მადლიერება თავისი ყველაზე ერთგული და დამსახურებული წევრების მიმართ განვლილი 20 წლის მანძილზე გაწეული მუშაობისათვის. სასიამოვნო იყო იმის ხილვა, როგორ გადასცემდნენ თითოეულ მათგანს მადლობის სერტიფიკატს ასოციაციის წიგნთან ერთად (რომელიც 20 წლის განმავლობაში გაწეულ მუშაობას ეძღვნება) აპლოდისმენტების თანხლებით.

ამ ღონისძიებას ყოველგვარი შესვენების გარეშე მოჰყვა კიდევ ერთი ოფიციალური შეხვედრა რამდენიმე ცნობილ და დამსახურებულ ქუთაისელთან, რომლებმაც უახლოეს მომავალში ქალაქის როტარი კლუბის ბირთვი უნდა შექმნან. მთავარი მომხსენებელი, რეზო რობაქიძე სულ ახალახანს ქალაქის მერიის უფროს ფინანსისტად დაინიშნა. რეზო ნიუპორტელეთათვის ახლობელი ადამიანი გახდა ნიუპორტის ბანკებში მისი საქმიანი ვიზიტის დროს, რომელიც სონიას ორგანიზებით რამდენიმე წლის წინ შედგა. თარჯიმნის, მაკა ჯაჯანიძის დახმარებით, რეზომ გვამცნო, რომ ქუთაისში როტარი კლუბის დაარსების იდეა დიდი მხარდაჭერით სარგებლობს და მოგვაწოდა დეტალური ინფორმაცია ამ მიმართულებით უკვე გადადგმული ნაბიჯების შესახებ. შემდგომი განხილვის და დისკუსიის პროცესში სონიამ გამოხატა დიდი კმაყოფილება უკვე მიღწეული პროგრესით, ხაზი გაუსვა, რომ დაფუძნების დადგენილ პროცედურას უთუოდ დასჭირდება გარკვეული პერიოდი და ყოველგვარი შესაძლო დახმარება აღუთქვა მასპინძლებს.

აქედანვე გავემართეთ მესხიშვილის სახელმწიფო აკადემიური თეატრის შენობისაკენ დიდ საქველმოქმედო გალა კონცერტზე დასასწრებად. ეს ღონისძიება ჩვენი ვიზიტის პროგრამას ბოლო მომენტში დაემატა და საშუალება მოგვეცა საქართველოს საუკეთესო საოპერო შემსრულებელებისთვის მოგვესმინა. დარბაზი სავსე იყო და, როცა კონცერტის დასასრულს ქალაქის მერმა გიორგი თევდორაძემ სცენიდან მადლობა გადაუხადა მომღერლებს, მან ჩვენი იქ ყოფნის ფაქტიც აღნიშნა. ჩვენდა გასაოცრად, აუდიტორიამ ჩვენც აპლოდისმენტებით დაგავჯილდოვა, რაც მით უფრო მოულოდნელი იყო, თუ შესრულების იმ უაღრესად მაღალ დონეს გავითვალისწინებთ, რისი მოსმენის ბედნიერებაც ჩვენ ყველას წილად გვხვდა.

Day 3. Monday 25 October.

This was a day filled with enjoyable meetings that will be of future benefit to the twinning and here we wish to express our special thanks to Karino Megrelishvili (David’s father) who regularly acted as our driver while we were in Kutaisi.

Our first meeting was at the City Hall with the Governor of Imereti Mr Lasha Makatsaria, the Deputy Governor Mr Giga Shushania, the Mayor of Kutaisi Mr Giorgi Tevdoradze and the Head of the Kutaisi City Council Mr Amiran Khvadagiani, as well as Professor Madonna. Giga and Giorgi were already friends as we had hosted them in Newport a month previously and our translator was Maia Alavidze, one of our closest friends in Kutaisi. Consequently the meeting was far less formal than is often the case on these occasions.

We discussed the success of the twinning over the past twenty years, our future plans and the vast changes that have taken place in both Georgia and Wales in that time. Sonia introduced herself as the new Chair of the NKTA and Derek took the opportunity to thank the Mayor and the Council Leader for honouring him with Honorary Citizenship of Kutaisi.

After leaving the City Centre, we and our translator Natia Zviadadze walked through central Kutaisi in warm sunshine to the Gelati Theological Academy and on the way we stopped in Newport Street to admire the new street sign put up especially for our visit.

The Gelati Academy provides education and training within the Georgian Orthodox Church and the first person to meet us on our arrival was Levan Tkeshalashvili, the young man who was hosted in Newport by Father Mark Soady and Brian and Dianne Cox two years ago.

We were introduced to the new Head of the Academy, Father Michael, and in response to his welcome Rosemary talked about the central role Newport’s church leaders played during the early years of the twinning. Other subjects covered included the Orthodox Church in Wales (we mentioned that the NKTA organised a talk by the Head of the Welsh region of the Orthodox Church in Newport a few years ago) and the growing number of Georgian icons now gracing the walls of St Woolos Cathedral. The discussions ended with Father Michael expressing the hope that he can continue to foster friendly relations between the two cities church leaders. This meeting was followed by refreshments and more informal talks on the balcony overlooking the River Rioni. Our conversations were assisted by Levan and Mamuka, the young man who assists the Academy’s students with their English. Intriguingly, Mamuka speaks English with a Scottish accent having lived in Glasgow for some time, and we wonder if this will have a lasting effect on the English spoken by Georgian Orthodox priests!

Both Levan and Mamuka then joined us, together with another excellent interpreter, Maka Jajanidze, on a visit to Motsameta, the ancient church positioned precariously above a deep gorge through which flows the River Rioni. Motsameta is presently being renovated (another renovation!) and while marvelling at the church and the spectacular views we were met by the father of Anna Chankvetadze, the young student presently studying at Newport University, and her sister Patti. After much talk and laughter, we had to decline Mr Chankvetadze’s kind invitation to visit his house due to lack of time and for the same reason we had to abandon the scheduled visit to Gelati.

We were returned at speed to the crowded office of the Kutaisi Newport International Association where we immediately fell into conversation with such long standing friends as Lyalya Kobeshavidze, Madlen Giorgadze, Tsitsino Todua, Kate Melkadze, Rusiko Gvilava, Dr Nana Dzidziguri, Nunu Charkviani, Zeko Khachidze and the University librarian Giorgi Chichinadze. After a while Madonna asked for silence and after welcoming us once again she invited the Mayor to present KNIA certificates to each member present who had made a special contribution to the Twinning. As this seemed to consist of everyone in the room the presentations lasted some time, augmented with musical interludes by talented young music students. It was a splendid way to thank KNIA members for their dedication and hard work over the past twenty years and fun to see everyone presented with their certificate and applauded as if at a school prize giving.

Without a break, the presentations were followed by a formal meeting with a number of prominent Kutaisi citizens who intend to form the nucleus of the city’s first Rotary Club. The lead speaker was Mr Rezo Robakidze, the recently appointed Chief Finance Officer at the Civic Centre. Rezo is fondly remembered for his study visit of the banks in Newport organised by Sonia a few years ago. Through his interpreter Maka Jajanidze ( the young lady who had visited Motsameta with us earlier) Rezo reported that there was strong support in Kutaisi for the establishment a branch of Rotary and described the progress presently underway that will lead to its formation. In the ensuing general discussion, Sonia said how pleased she was with the progress that has been made given that Rotary has a process that must be followed which will inevitably take some time. She offered to assist in any way necessary.

Then we hurried off to the Meskhishvili State Theatre in the central square for a magnificent Charity Gala Concert. This addition to our programme was included at the last minute and it consisted of a concert performance by some of Georgia’s finest opera singers. The Theatre was full and when, at the end of the concert, Mayor Giorgi Tevdoradze took the stage to thank the singers he also announced that we were in the audience. To our astonishment the audience then applauded us, too. It seemed unwarranted, especially when compared to the magnificent performances we had just heard.

This busy and rewarding day ended with an informal dinner at the home of Vakhtang Khertsuriani and his family. Vakhtang is the brother of Maka Khertsuriani, the Mayor’s wife. Soon we were joined by Maka and Giorgi, Imereti Governor Lasha Makatsaria, Deputy Governor Giga and his wife and Madonna. Vakhtang and his wife made us very welcome, the meal was fabulous and the conversation was lively and interesting. At the end of a lovely evening we felt we were now on closer and even friendlier terms with some of the most important decision makers in Kutaisi and Imereti.

სამშაბათის პროგრამაში უბრალოდ ნათქვამი იყო `ბათუმის დათვალიერება მამუკასა და ავთანდილთან ერთად”. ამინდიც ზედგამოჭრილი აღმოჩნდა, რომ დასავლეთ საქართველოში მანქანით გვესეირნა და ერთი დღე შავი ზღვის სანაპიროზე გაგვეტარებინა. ექიმი მამუკა მიქაძე არაერთხელ ყოფილა ნიუპორტში და ცოტა ხნით კიდეც მუშაობდა გვენტის სამეფო საავადმყოფოში. ავთანდილი მამუკას ახლო მეგობარია და ჩვენთვის სასიამოვნო იყო მისი გაცნობა. მთელი მგზვრობის მანძილზე ვტკბებოდით ჯერ იმერეთისა და გურიის მომხიბლავი პეიზაჟებით, ხოლო მოგვიანებით აჭარის სანაპირო ზოლის მშვენიერებით და ზღვის ხილვით, რომელიც ზოგჯერ გაიელვებდა ხოლმე ხეებს შორის. ბათუმში შუადღისას ჩავედით და ერთ კაფეში შევჩერდით უგემრიელესი ადგილობრივი ხაჭაპურის (მამუკას სიტყვებს თუ დავუჯერებთ "ბათუმში საუკეთესო აჭარული ხაჭაპურის") დასაგემოვნებლად.

ბათუმის, საქართველოს ამ მთავარი საზღვაო კურორტის, დათვალიერებისას გაგვაოგნა განვლილი რამდენიმე წლის მანძილზე მომხდარმა ცვლილებებმა. ქალაქის ცენტრში ძველი შენობები აღდგენილი და გასუფთავებულია. რესტავრაცია დიდი მზრუნველობითა და რუდუნებითაა ჩატარებული. უამრავი პარკი თვალს გტაცებს თავისი შადრევნებით, ახალი ბილიკებით, ახლადშეღებილი სანაყინეებითა და მომხიბლავი რესტორნებით. ქალაქის ცენტრში და ზღვის სანაპიროზე გასეირნების შემდეგ ამ არაჩვეულებრივად დახვეწილ კურორტზე ჩვენი სტუმრობა დაგვირგვინდა თევზის ბრწყინვალე რესტორანში, რომლის მსგავსში მანამდე არც ერთი ჩვენგანი არ ყოფილა. რესტორნის ფანჯრიდან ვტკბებოდით გაჩახჩახებული შადრევნებისა და ზღვის გამაოგნებელი ხედით. გულწრფელად ვაღიარებთ, რომ ეს იყო არაჩვეულებრივი დღის სრულყოფილი დასასრული.

Day 4. Tuesday 26 October.

Tuesday’s programme just read `Batumi Sightseeing with Mamuka and Avtandil` and the weather was perfect for a car ride through western Georgia and an afternoon by the Black Sea. Dr Mamuka Mikadze has visited Newport several times and even worked for a while at the Royal Gwent Hospital. Avtandil is Mamuka’s long standing friend and colleague and we enjoyed making his acquaintance. It was an enjoyable drive, first through the farmlands of Imereti and Guria and then along the coastal road in Adjaria which gave us the occasional glimpse of the sea through the trees. We arrived in Batumi around mid-day and stopped at a local cafe for some delicious local khachapuri (“the best Adjarian katchapuri in Batumi” according to Mamuka.

When we looked around Batumi we were astonished at how this city, Georgia’s primary seaside resort, has developed over the past few years. The older buildings in the city centre have been either restored or cleaned and the infilling has been carried out with sensitivity and care. The numerous parks are well tended with sparkling fountains, new paths, freshly painted ice cream kiosks and attractive restaurants. After walking through the city centre and along the sea front we ended our visit to this ultra-smart resort, as night fell, with dinner in one of the finest and most elegant fish restaurants any of us have ever visited. Sitting with Mamuka and Avtandil at a window table overlooking a sensational floodlit fountain display with the sea beyond, we agreed that it was the perfect end to yet another outstanding day. Rosemary and Derek slept for most of the journey back to Kutaisi but awoke for a `nightcap` in Avtandil’s `White Bridge` restaurant/nightclub by the bridge from which it takes its name.

დილით 10 სთ-ზე აკაკი წერეთლის სახელმწიფო უნივერსიტეტს ვესტუმრეთ. პირველ რიგში, უნივერსიტეტის რექტორს პროფესორ გიორგი ღავთაძეს. ბ-ნმა გიორგიმ საუბარი მოგონებებით დაიწყო- დაახლოებით თერთმეტიოდე წლის წინ იგი, თურმე, ნიუპორტის უნივერსიტეტში ყოფილა. ეს საუბრის არაჩვეულებრივი დასაწყისი აღმოჩნდა. ძალიან გვესიამოვნა, რომ ბ-ნი გიორგი ნიუპორტში ყოფნას ასეთი ენთუზიაზმით იხსენებდა. ჩვენ ვისაუბრეთ ორ უნივერსიტეტს შორის არსებულ ახლო კავშირზე და მომავალ გეგმებზე, რომელიც, ჩვენი აზრით, კიდევ უფრო გაამყარებს ამ კავშირს – კერძოდ, გაცვლით პროგრამაზე, რომლის თანახმადაც ამჟამად ნიუპორტელი სტუდენტი ისწავლის ქუთაისში. იმედი გამოვთქვით, რომ მომავალში გაცლითი პროგრამა აკადემიურ პერსონალსა და ბიბლიოთეკის მუშაკებსაც შეეხება. შეხვედრამ ძალინ საზეიმო და მხიარულ ვითარებაში ჩაიარა, რაც ამ ორ უნივერსიტეტს შორის არსებული მეგობრობის კიდევ ერთი დადასტურება გახლდათ. მოგვიანებით შესაძლებლობა მოგვეცა პროფესორ გიორგი ონიანსა და მის მეუღლეს ეკას შევხვედროდით და მცირე ხნით გავსაუბრებოდით, ვიდრე გვერდით მწვანე დარბაზში შეკრებილ ინგლისური ენის სტუდენტებთან წარვსდგებოდით.

სტუდენტებთან ჩვენ სხვადასხვა საკითზე ვისაუბრეთ, რასაც მათი მხრიდან თბილი გამოხმაურება და შეკითხვებო მოჰყვა. თითეული მათგანის გამოსვლამ დაგვარწმუნა, რომ ამ უნივერსიტეტში ინგლისური მაღალ დონეზე ისწავლება. შეხვედრის ბოლოს სტუდენტები კიდევ უფრო გათამამდნენ, ჩვენს ირგვლივ შეიკრიბნენ და ცდილობდნენ რამდენიმე სიტყვა მაინც ეთქვათ ჩვენთვის.

სამწუხაროდ, ცოტა დრო გვქონდა, რადგან საგანგებო სიტუაციათა სამსახურში გვეჩქარებოდა მეხანძრეებთან შესახვედრად. მეხანძრეთა მეთაური, თავის გუნდთან ერთად ფორმებში გამოწყობილი გველოდა ახლადაშენებული სახანძროს წინ. შეხვედრას წინ უძღვოდა მოლაპარაკება ნიუპორტში სამეწარმეო ფირმა `Lion Apparel`-თან, რომელსაც მეხანძრეთა სამსახურის უფროსი, კევინ ბარი, როზმარი და სონია ხელმძღვანელობდა. ამ მოლაპარაკების შედეგად ქუთაისის სახანძრო ბრიგადას საჩუქრად გადაეცა 250 ფორმა. სწორედ ამ ფორმაში გამოწყობილი გველოდნენ ჩვენი მასპინძლები.

არაჩვეულებრივი თბილი შეხვედრა მოგვიწყვეს ქუთაისელმა მეხანძრეებმა. ჩვენ გადავეცით მეგორბული წერილი სამხრეთ უელსის სახანძრო სამსახურის უფროსის ენდი მარლისაგან. მოვიხიბლეთ ახალი სახანძრო სადგურის შენობით. ახალი სახანძრო მანქანები, ავზები, დანადგარები, მოწყობილობა, კაბინეტები და დასაძინებელი ოთახები ნამდვილად შთაბმეჭდავად გამოიყურებოდა. შემდეგ გადავინაცვლეთ საკონფერენციო დარბაზში, სადაც სახანძრო სამსახურის მეთაურმა გაწეული სამსახურისათვის დიდი მადლიერება გამოხატა ჩვენს მიმართ და მომავალი დახმარების იმედი გამოთქვა. მისი სურვილია უახლოეს მომავალში შეხვდეს კევინ ბარს და პირადად გადაუხადოს მადლობა. ბოლოს, რათქმა უნდა გაგვიმასპინძლდნენ არანახული სიდიდის არაჩვეულებრივი ტორტით, რომელიც ისეთი ლამაზი იყო, რომ დეკორატიულ ნივთს მოგაგონებდათ.

შუადღეზე კლინიკა L&J ვეწვიეთ. ეს ის კლინიკაა, სადაც ზაზა, მამუკა და მირიანი მუშაობენ. შესანიშნავად აღჭურვილი კლინიკის დათვალიერების შემდეგ საკონფერენციო დარბაზში შევედით, სადაც კლინიკის თანამშრომლებს შევხვდით და სიამოვნებით მოვუსმინეთ ზაზას გამოსვლას, სადაც მან ნიუპორტში ვიზიტის შესახებ და ქუთაისელ და ნიუპორტელ ექიმთა მომავალ ურთიერთობებზე ისაუბრა. ჩვენც გამოვედით სიტყვით. სონიამ, რომელმაც ბევრი წელი გაატარა ეროვნულ ჯანდაცვაში, თქვა, რომ ამ კლინიკაში ყოფნისას თავს ისე გრძნობდა, როგორც ბრიტანეთში. შემდეგ ზაზამ ჩამოსვლის დღიდან მოყოლებული ჩვენი იქ ყოფნის ამსახველი ფილმი აჩვენა. მათ შორის იყო ხაჭაპურის გამოცხობის, ღვინის დაყენებისა და ხის დარგვის ჩვენეული ოსტატობა და ის “სენსაციური” აღმოჩენაც, რომლის თანახმადაც, ვალიელებსა და კოლხებს ორიათასწლიანი მეგობრობა აკავშირებთ. ხუმრობამ კულმინაციას მიიაღწია, როცა, ზაზამ დერეკს ჩარჩოში ჩასმული სერთიფიკატი გადასცა, რომლის თანახმად დერეკმა წარმატებით დაასრულა თამადობის ეროვნული ინსტიტუტი და მიიღო თამადის საპატიო წოდება. ასე, რომ იგი სერტიფიცირებული ქართული თამადა გახდა.

შემდეგ პროგრამაში იყო ქუთაისის მუსიკალური სკოლის კონცერტი, რომელიც ყოველთვის ალამაზებს და კიდევ უფრო სასიამოვნოს ხდის ქუთაისში ვიზიტს. ჩვენ, ცხადია, წინა რიგში დაგვსვეს და დავტკბით ქუთაისელთა მუსიკალური ტალანტით. კონცერტი ეროვნულ ტანსაცმელში გამოწყობილმა ბავშვთა გუნდმა გახსნა შესანიშნავი სიმღერით, რასაც მოჰყვა ახალგაზდრა პიანისტთა და ვოკალისტთა ვირტუოზული შესრულება. წარმოდგენა დასრულდა ქართული შესანიშნავი გუნდური სიმღერით, რამაც გაგვაოგნა და, რაც არასოდეს დაგვავიწყდება. მინდა, მადლობა გადავუხადო მადონასა და ჩვენ ქუთაისელ მეგობრებს იმისათვის, რომ ასე კარგ პროგრამას ადგენენ ჩვენთვის და ასე ემზადებიან ჩვენთან შესახვედრად.

შემდეგ სხვადასხვა მიმართულებით წავედით-როზმარი და სონია ქალთა რეგიონალური განვითარების ჯგუფს შეხვდნენ, დერეკი კი ფეხბურთის მატჩს დაესწრო.

ქალთა რეგიონალური განვითარების ჯგუფი 2007 წელს შეიქმნა, როგორ ევროგაერთიანების პროექტი. ჯჟგუფის მიზანია ქალთა ინტერესების დაცვა საქართველოში. ჯგუფის წევრებმა მოკლედ და საინტერესოდ წარმოადგინეს თავი და ისაუბრეს საკუთარ მიღწევებსა და სამომავლო გეგმებზე. სონია და როზმარი საპატიო წევრებად აირჩიეს და წევრობის სამკლაურები გადასცეს, მათ კი ასოციაციის სამკერდე ნიშნები მიართვეს მასპინძლებს. შეხვედრამ აჩვენა, რომ ქალთა უფლებებისა და იმ პრობლემების შესახებ სასაუბროდ, რაც ქალებს დღეს აწუხებთ საქართველოსა თუ უელსში, მთელი დღეც კი შეიძლება ცოტა იყოს (ამჟამად, ქუთაისის ქალაქის საბჭოში მხოლოდ ერთი ქალია). იმედია, ჯგუფი გაძლიერდება, მუშაობას განაგრძობს და უფრო მეტ ქალს მისცემს საშუალებას მონაწილეობა მიიღოს გადაწყვეტილებათა მიღებაში.

ფეხბურთის მატჩი, რომელსაც დერეკი დაესწრო ქუთაისსა და სამტრედიას შორის იყო. ქალაქის ცენტრში მიმდინარე რეკონსტრუქციებით აღფრთოვანებული დერეკი სასიამოვნოდ გაოცებული დარჩა, როცა ნახა ქუთაისის შესანიშნავი, ახლადაშენებული სტადიონი, რომელიც 18,000 მაყურებელს იტევს. მიუხედავად დერეკის დიდი მცდელობისა და ხმამაღალი გამხნევებისა, თამაში ფრედ დამთავრდა, თუმცა ყველა ერთხმად აღიარებდა, რომ ქუთაისმა უკეთესად ითამაშა.

ქუთაისში ჩვენი ყოფნის ბოლო საპროგრამო აკორდი იყო ყველაზე უფრო დიდებული და მშვენიერი საღამოს წვეულება – გაცილების სადილი სასტუმრო ,,ბაგრატში''. დარბაზის მთელ სიგრძეზე გადაჭიმული იყო მდიდრული სუფრა. ჩვენდა სასიხარულოდ, ჩვენთან ერთად იყო თითქმის ყველა ის ადამიანი, რომლებიც მთელი კვირის განმავლობაში თავს დაგვტრიალებდნენ და გულთბილად გვმასპინძლობდნენ. მათ შორის იყვნენ ჩვენი პირადი თარჯიმნები მაია ალავიძე, ნინო ნიჟარაძე, ნათია ზვიადაძე და ზინიკო ჩაჩანიძე, რომლებიც ამჯერადაც ჩვენს გვერდით იყვნენ და გვეხმარებოდნენ, გავსაუბრებოდით შეკრებილ საზოგადოებას და კომენტარი გაგვეკეთებინა ცერემონიის მსვლელობისას წარმოთქმული სადღეგრძელოებისათვის.

ჩვენ ვხვდებით, რომ დიდი პატივი დაგვდო ქალაქის მერმა, როცა ჩვენი სუფრის თამადობა იკისრა. საღამოს განმავლობაში გიორგიმ (ქალაქის მერმა) ქართული სუფრისათვის აუცილებელი შესანიშნავი სადღეგძელოები წარმოთქვა. ჩვენი ბეჯითი თარჯიმნებიც გულმოდგინედ მუშაობდნენ და საკუთარი სიამოვნებისთვის ძალიან ცოტა დრო რჩებოდათ.

ბ-ნმა მერმა კიდევ ერთხელ გაუსვა ხაზი იმას, რომ არა მარტო ის, არამედ მთელი ქუთაისი ყოველთვის განსაკუთრებული პატივისცემითა და სიყვარულით მასპინძლობს ნიუპორტელ სტუმრებს. დერეკმა მთელი პასუხისმგებლობა თავის თავზე აიღო და ნიუპორტელთა სახელით უპასუხა წარმოთქმულ სადღეგრძელოს და თან, მთელი ძალისხმევით ცდილობდა, რომ ღვინო არ მოკიდებოდა და ფხიზელი დარჩენილიყო.

საღამოს ყველაზე უფრო მნიშვნელოვანი და ნათელი წერტილი, მადონა მეგრელიშვილის სადღეგრძელო იყო. წარმოთქმულ სადღეგრძელოში მერმა ხაზი გაუსვა ქ–ნ მადონას თავდადებას და მის უდიდეს წვლილს ქალაქის განვითარების საქმეში. ბ-ნმა მერმა კიდევ ერთხელ გადაუხადა მადლობა ქალბატონ მადონას იმისათვის, რომ იგი დათანხმდა და მიიღო საპატიო მოქალაქის წოდება, რომელსაც უკვე მრავალი წელია სთავაზობენ, მაგრამ ყოველთვის უარს ამბობდა. ყველა ფეხზე წამოდგა და ადღეგრძელა ქალბატონი მადონა. და ამით, ყველამ კიდევ ერთხელ დაადასტურა ღრმა პატივისცემა ქ–ნ მადონას მიმართ და, ასევე როგორ აფასებენ მას ქუთაისში და მის გარეთ.

საღამოს დასასრულს ჩვენი მეგობრები ჩვენს ირგვლივ შეიკრიბნენ და კიდევ ერთხელ გვითხრეს, რომ ძალიან უხაროდათ ჩვენთან შეხვედრა და ჩვენც ვცდილობდით მათი შესანიშნავი და დაუვიწყარი შეხვედრისათვის შესატყვისად გვეპასუხა.

Day 5. Wednesday 27 October.

At 10.00a.m. we visited the Akaki Tsereteli State University. Our first meeting was with the Rector, Professor Giorgi Gavtadze and his academic colleagues. Professor Gavtadze began the discussions by talking about his visit to Newport University eleven years or so ago. It was the perfect way to open the discussions and we were pleased to hear that he remembered his visit with such enthusiasm. We talked about the close links between our two Universities and plans that we hope will further strengthen co-operation between the two institutions – including a continued student exchange involving Newport students studying in Kutaisi and, hopefully, more exchanges of academic and library staff. It was a convivial meeting that reflected the very friendly relations between the two Universities. We were then pleased to have the opportunity of a brief conversation with Professor Giorgi Oniani and his wife Eka before being escorted into the adjoining hall where a large number of English speaking students were gathered. Each of us spoke on a variety of topics and this was followed by welcoming speeches and questions from the students – all of which demonstrated the high quality of English teaching in the University. As the session went on the students relaxed and at the end we were surrounded by young people hoping to exchange a few words.

There was little time for this, however, as we then needed to hurry to the Kutaisi Fire Station to meet the Chief Officer and his team of fire fighters, who were lined up outside the recently rebuilt fire station in their uniforms awaiting our arrival and inspection. This was in consequence of the 250 uniforms that were recently given to the Kutaisi firemen by the manufacturing firm `Lion Apparel` after discussions and negotiations involving Deputy Chief Fire Officer Kevin Barry, Rosemary and Sonia. We received a wonderful welcome and handed Kutaisi’s Chief Fire Officer a comradely letter from Chief Officer Andy Marle of South Wales Fire and Rescue Service. We admired the two new fire engines and fire tender parked nearby and after taking many photographs we were invite to look around the station. The new facilities, included offices and sleeping quarters, were superb. We then entered the new conference room and during the speeches the Chief Fire Officer expressed his gratitude for the help already received from Newport and further assistance promised in the future and added that he hoped to meet Kevin Barry in the near future. Finally we were offered refreshments - with the largest ever iced cake as the centrepiece.

In the afternoon we enjoyed a short visit to the L&J Clinic, the clinic where Zaza, Mamuka and Mirian practice. After a conducted tour of the excellent facilities we were escorted to the lecture hall where we were introduced to the many staff by Zaza who described their visit to Newport and the links that have been made between the doctors in Kutaisi and Newport. We each spoke to the assembled staff and Sonia, who has spent her career in the National Health Service, said how much she felt at home in this medical/ clinical environment. Zaza then showed the film he had commissioned which featured our activities since our arrival in Georgia. It included, embarrassingly, the `sensational` finding of `proof` of the two thousand year old contacts between the Welsh and the Colchi and our skill (or lack of it) at wine and katchapuri making and tree planting! The jokes continued when Zaza presented Derek with a framed certificate stating that he had successfully completed a course at the `National Institute of Tamadas` and was now a certified Georgian toastmaster! It was an interesting visit medically – and very entertaining too.

Next on the programme was a concert at the University by students attending the local Music Academy – always one of the highlights of a visit to Kutaisi. There was a large audience and we were seated in the front row where we could only marvel at the high quality of musical talent in the city. The concert opened with a glorious choir of young children in national dress and they were followed by a succession of outstanding young vocalists and instrumentalists. Finally, we were treated to a performance by a choir of young men and women who sang, hummed and whistled their way through a magical and very demanding piece of Georgian music that left everyone stunned – a truly memorable experience which underlined the quality of the programme that Madonna and our friends in the KNIA had arranged for us!

We then went in different directions. Sonia and Rosemary attended a meeting of the `Women for Regional Development Group` while Derek was taken to a football match.

The women’s group was formed in 2007 as part of a European Union funded equalities project. The members represent a coalition of women’s groups and professional bodies and their aim is to promote and develop women’s interests in Georgian civic life. The members each gave short but very interesting presentations about themselves, their achievements and their hopes for the future. Sonia and Rosemary were made Honorary Members and presented with membership armbands (a nice change from membership badges) and both felt an entire day could have been spent discussing issues that affect women in Wales and Georgia (at present there is only one woman on Kutaisi City Council). Hopefully this group will go from strength to strength and enable more women to become decision makers in Georgia

The football match Derek attended was a `local derby` between Kutaisi and Samtredia. After seeing all the new construction work in the city it came as little surprise to him to find that Kutaisi now has an excellent, newly completed stadium that houses both the local football and athletic teams and can seat 18,000 spectators. Despite Derek’s vocal encouragement the game ended in a draw, although everyone agreed that Kutaisi had by far the best of the game!

The evening ended in the grandest possible manner with the final event of the Kutaisi based programme, the Farewell Dinner in the Hotel Bagrati. It was held in the ballroom and a typically sumptuous suprha was laid out on a massive table that stretched the length of the room. Once seated, we found that we were surrounded by many of the people responsible for providing us with us such a magnificent welcome during the week with our delightful personal translators, Maia Alavidze, Nino Nijaradze, Natia Zviadadze and Ziniko Chachnidze seated close by to help us with our conversations and find our way through the ceremonial toasts.

We understood the honour that was being conferred on us when the Mayor assumed the role of Tamada. During the evening Giorgi proposed (with great style) the full, traditional programme of Georgian toasts and as a result our diligent translators spent most of the time working, with little spare time to enjoy the meal. Once again the Mayor stressed how pleased he and the people of Kutaisi are to welcome visitors from Newport and Derek upheld Newport’s honour by taking on much of the responsibility of replying for us while struggling to remain sober.

For us, the highlight of the evening came when the Mayor proposed a special toast to Madonna. The toast praised her for the huge contribution she has made to the city during her lifetime and the Mayor emphasised how pleased everyone was that Madonna had agreed to accept an Honorary Citizenship – an honour she has been offered several times in the past but had felt unable to accept. Everyone rose to their feet to speak in support of the toast – a demonstration of how highly Madonna is regarded in Kutaisi and beyond.

At the end of the evening our friends gathered round to tell us how much they had enjoyed our visit while we responded by attempting to thank them adequately for their wonderful and unforgettable welcome.

მე-6 დღე, ხუთშაბათი, 28 ოქტომბერი

ქუთაისში ჩვენი ვიზიტის უკანასკნელი დღის დილამ არაოფიციალურ გარემოში ჩაიარა. სონია შეხვდა სოსო ხახალეიშვილს, ადგილობრივი დემოკრატიის სააგენტოს ქუთაისის ოფისიდან და მათ განიხილეს მალკაფორნეში მომავალი შეხვედრა; დერეკი ამ დროს ესაუბრებოდა თავის ძველ მეგობარს, კონსტანტინე (კოტე) ჭარხალაშვილს, იმერეთის ტურიზმის დეპარტამენტის თავმჯდომარეს.

კოტემ უამბო დერეკს იმის შესახებ, რომ მრავალი წლის განმავლობაში მისი ძირითადი პრობლემა რეგიონში ჩამოსული ტურისტების ნაკლებობა იყო, ამჟამად კი ტურისტთა მზარდი რიცხვის გამო საცხოვრებელი ადგილებით უზრუნველყოფის საკითხი დგას.

შემდეგ როზმარიმ, მადონამ და დერეკმა ქალაქის ცენტრში გაისეირნეს, შეხვდნენ და სიამოვნებით გაესაუბრენ რამდენიმე ადამიანს, ვინც ადრე ნიუპორტს წვეოდა. რიზმარმა, დერეკმა და მადონამ უამრავ თემაზე ისაუბრეს სანამ პარკის ერთ-ერთ სკამზე ისხდნენ და მზეზე ნებივრობდნენ. და ბოლოს, როცა ჩვენი გამგზავრების დრო დადგა, მრავალი ნამდვილად საუკეთესო მეგობარი მოვიდა და გაგვაცილეს.

თბილისში მამუკამ წაგვიყვანა, და გზად კვლავ შევნიშნეთ ,,ნიუპორტში დამზადებული'' ხიდი გორთან. მოგვიანებით მამუკამ და ეკამ მოგვაკითხეს სასტუმროში და უმაღლესი დონის დახვეწილ რესტორანში რედისონში წაგვიყვანეს. ჩვენ ვისხედით სასტუმროს ზედა სართულზე, საიდანაც განათებული თბილისის თვალწარმტაცი ხედი იშლება. ეს იყო კიდევ ერთი დაუვიწყარი რამ. ვფიქრობ, ჩვენ სათანადოდ ვერ გადავუხადეთ მადლობა მამუკას და ეკას იმ გულუხვობისა და სიკეთისათვის, რომელიც მათ მთელი კვირის განმავლობაში გამოიჩინეს ჩვენს მიმართ.

Day 6. Thursday 28 October.

The morning of our last day in Kutaisi was taken up in informal discussions. Sonia met Soso Khakhaleishvili from the Kutaisi Office of the Local Democracy Agency to discuss the forthcoming ALDA meeting in Malcaforne while Derek spoke to his old friend, Konstantin (Kote) Charkhalashvili, Head of Tourism in Imereti.

Kote told Derek how, for many years, his chief problem was the lack of tourists coming to the area but how the problem has now changed to one of lack of accommodation to meet the rapidly growing number of tourists. A more positive form of challenge – but a major challenge nevertheless!
Then Rosemary, Madonna and Derek took a short stroll in the city centre during which they were pleased to meet, and chat with, several people who had visited Newport in the past and they discussed a wide range of topics while sitting together on a park bench in the sunshine.

Finally, when the time came for us to leave we were waved off by a large group of truly marvellous friends.

We were driven back to Tbilisi by Mamuka, again noting the `made in Newport` bridge near Gori. On our arrived in Tbilisi we visited the breast cancer awareness clinic where Eka, Mamuka’s wife, works and met Mata, Eka’s younger sister. They asked us to join them for dinner and later they collected us from our hotel and, together with Mata and Dato ( Mamuka and Eka’s young son), we were taken to a highly sophisticated restaurant on the top floor of the Radisson Hotel from which there are spectacular views over floodlit Tbilisi. It was another unforgettable experience and we can’t thank Mamuka and Eka enough for the generosity and kindness they showed us during the week. However it wasn’t the last time we were to see Mamuka, Eka and Mata before leaving for home!

პარასკევს, მარიკა მეგრელიშვილი დაგვხვდა სასტუმროში და ბრიტანეთის საელჩოში წაგვიყვანა, სადაც ჩვენ ახლადდანიშნულ ბრიტანეთის ელჩს, ჯუდით გოფს შევხვდით. საელჩოში შესვლას გარკვეული დრო სჭირდება უსაფრთხოების გამო, მაგრამ, ბოლოს და ბოლოს, ჩვენ მარიკასთან ერთად შევხვდით სოფიკო ქაცარავას, ელჩის პრეს-მდივანს, რომელიც დიდად ეხმარება ასოციაციას მუშაობაში. მან წარგვადგინა ელჩთან (მაგრამ თავდაპირველად მარიკამ გადასცა სოფიკოს ქუთაისი ნიუპორტის საერთაშორისო ასოციაციის მადლობის სერთიფიკატი გაწეული სამსახურისათვის!).

ელჩთან საუბარი მეტად საინტერესოდ წარიმართა. მას ესიამოვნა, როცა გაიგო ნიუპორტისა და ქუთაისს შორის ინტენსიური და ხანგრძლივი მეგობრობის შესახებ და საქართველოს რეგიონალური სირთულეების გათვალისწინებით, კომენტარი გააკეთა ქართულ და ვალიურ ქალაქებს შორის კავშირის ღირებულებაზე. მან განსაკუთრებული ყურადღება გაამახვილა ბრიტანელი და ქართველი ბიზნესმენების კავშირის აუცილებლობაზე და მოხარული დარჩა, როცა გაიგო, რომ ნიუპორტის როტარი კლუბი ხელს უწყობს და ეხმარება ქუთაისში როტარი კლუბის ჩამოყალიბებას. ელჩზე ასევე შთაბეჭდილება მოახდინა ახლო კავშირმა ორი ქალაქის უნივერსიტეტებსა და ექიმებს შორის, მეხანძრეთა საჩუქრებმა, და ასევე ტრენინგებმა, რომელიც ქუთაისელ მეხანძრეებს სამხრეთ უელსის სახანძრო სამსახურმა ჩაუტარა.

როცა ვკითხეთ, როდის აპირებდა ქუთაისში სტუმრობას, მან გვიპასუხა, რომ მას უკვე დაგეგმილი აქვს რამდენიმე ვიზიტი ქვეყნის სხვადასხვა ნაწილში, მათ შორის დასავლეთ საქართველოს დიდ და პატარა ქალაქებში. ელჩმა კიდევ ასოციაციის რამდენიმე სამკერდე ნიშანი გვთხოვა დიპლომატი კოლეგებისათვის და შემდეგ დაგვათვალიერებინა საელჩო, რომელსაც მომავალ კვირას ოფიციალურად პრინცი ედუარდი გახსნის. საუბრის შემდეგ ჩვენ მარიკასთან ერთად ვიგრძენით, რომ ელჩზე შთაბეჭდილება მოახდინა იმ მრავალრიცხოვანმა საქმიანობამ, რომელიც ჩვენს ქალაქთა შორის მეგობრობას უკავშირდება. ამან წინ წამოსწია ქუთაისის საკითხი მაშინ, როცა ელჩთა უმრავლესობის ძირითადი ფიქრები თუ ზრახვები დედაქალაქის ირგვლივ ტრიალებს.

შემდეგ ჩვენ შევხვდით ნიკა ოყრეშიძესა და მადონა ტყეშელაშვილს მის მხიარულ მძღოლთან (რომელიც ხატმწერია) ერთად და კიდევ ერთ კარგ რესტორანში წავედით, რომლის ფანჯრებიდან თბილისის შესანიშნავი ხედები სჩანდა (ამჯერად დღის თბილისის), სადაც მარიკამ მადონას და ნიკას გაწეული სამსახურისთვის სერტიფიკატები გადასცა!

მოგვიანებით მადონამ და ნიკამ თბილისი შემოგვატარეს. ჩვენს შორის ყველაზე მამაცი ეშმაკის ბორბალზე დაჯდა, რომელიც მთის მწვერვალზე მდებარეობს და მთელ ქალაქს გადაჰყურებს. შემდეგ ვიმგზავრეთ თბილისის მეტროთი. და ბოლოს, დაქანცულებმა, სადილის წინ ცოტა დასვენება ვითხოვეთ.

ეს იყო ჩვენი ბოლო საღამო საქართველოში და ჩვენმა წინდახედულმა მასპინძლებმა საუკეთესო არჩევანი გააკეთეს – “ქართული” რესტორანი ტრადიციული დეკორაციებითა და კერძებით , ცოცხალი მუსიკითა და ხალხური ცეკვებით. ძალიან გავიხარეთ, როცა მადონას, ნიკას და მარიკასთან ერთად ჩვენ შემოგვიერთდნენ მეგი მანდარია და მაია აბდალაძე. მაიას ნახვა ნამდვილად სასიამოვნო სიურპრიზი იყო, რადგანაც როზმარი და დერეკი მთელი ამ 20 წლის მანძილზე უწყვეტ კავშირში არიან მასთან. ამ საღამოს რესტორანში სონია ერთი ადამიანით დაინტერესდა, რომელიც დრაკონის წითელ კოსტუმში იყო გამოწყობილი. ის ექსეტერიდან მოსკოვში დაფუძნებული რაგბის გუნდის წევრი აღმოჩნდა, რომელიც თბილისში მატჩზე იყო ჩამოსული. ჩვენს მაგიდასთან განსაკუთრებულად მხიარული ადამიანები შეიკრიბენ (ნაკლებად ხმაურიანი, ვიდრე რაგბის მოთამაშეები) ტრადიციულ ქართულ გარემოცვაში. შუაღამეს ჩვენ უხალისოდ განვაცხადეთ, რომ უნდა წავსულიყავით, ბარგი ჩაგვეწყო და აეროპორტში წასასვლელად მოვმზადულიყავით. ასე, რომ შევსვით ბოლო სადღეგრძელო და დავემშვიდობეთ ერთმანეთს.

Day 7. Friday 29 October

On Friday, Marika Megrelishvili met us at our hotel and took us to the newly opened British Embassy to meet the recently appointed Ambassador, Judith Gough. Entrance to the Embassy takes some time due to the formidable security but eventually we, together with Marika, were met by Sophiko Katsarava, the Ambassador’s assistant who has given so much help to the twinning in the past and she introduced us to the Ambassador (but not before Marika had presented Sophiko with one of the KNIA certificates for services to twinning!)

The talks with the Ambassador were interesting. She was pleased to hear about the extensive and long standing kinship between Newport and Kutaisi and, given Georgia’s regional difficulties, commented on the value of links between a Georgian city and a Welsh city. She stressed the need to encourage links between British and Georgian business people and was glad to hear that the Rotary Club in Newport was providing help and advice in the establishing of a Rotary Club in Kutaisi. The Ambassador also appeared impressed when we told her of the close relationship between the two cities universities and doctors, the gift of firemen’s uniforms from NKTA and `Lion Apparel` and the training being provided to Kutaisi firemen by the South Wales Fire and Rescue Service.

When asked when she would be visiting Kutaisi she replied that she has asked for a series of visits to be arranged for her that would take in all parts of the country including the cities and towns of western Georgia. The Ambassador asked us if we would let her have extra NKTA badges for her diplomatic colleagues and then took us on a tour of the Embassy - which is so new that it was awaiting an official opening by HRH Prince Edward the following week. After the talks we (including Marika) felt that the Ambassador had been impressed to hear about the many activities associated with the twinning and that it had helped promote Kutaisi when most of the Ambassador’s immediate thoughts could well be centred around events in the nation’s capital.

We then met Nick and Madona T and together with Madona’s cheerful driver (an icon painter!) we were taken to yet another good restaurant with splendid views overlooking Tbilisi (daytime views this time!) for lunch – where Marika handed Nick and Madona their own KNIA certificates for meritorious service!
Later Madona and Nick took us on a tour of Tbilisi. The brave amongst us took a scary trip on the ferris wheel situated at the summit of the mountain overlooking the city and we were taken for a ride on the Tbilisi metro. Finally we admitted exhaustion and asked if we could have a short rest in our hotel before dinner.

It was our last evening in Georgia and our thoughtful hosts had chosen the perfect venue – a `Georgian` restaurant with traditional décor and food and live music and folk dancing. To add to our enjoyment, we, together with Madona, Nick and Marika, were joined by Maggie Mandaria and Maia Abdaladze. Maggie we had met in Kutaisi earlier in the week but seeing Maia was a pleasant surprise as Rosemary and Derek have known and been in regular contact with her for the last twenty years. Oddly enough, during the evening Sonia enquired about a man in a red dragon costume on the far side of the restaurant and he told her he was from Exeter, not Wales, and that he was a member of an ex-pat rugby team based in Moscow visiting Tbilisi for a match. It was a particularly cheerful gathering on our table (though not as noisy as the rugby players) in an authentically Georgian setting. However around midnight we reluctantly announced that we needed to be up, packed and ready for the airport in just five hours time so we drank our last toasts and made our final farewells. Nick then kindly returned us to our hotel and said goodbye.

მთელი ღამე არც ერთს თვალი არ მოგვიხუჭავს, რადგანაც გვეშინოდა, რომ სასტუმროს პერსონალს დილის 4 საათზე ჩვენი გაღვიძება დაავიწყდებოდა, ასე რომ, როცა მადონა ტყეშელაშვილმა და მისმა ხატმწერმა მძღოლმა სასტუმროში აეროპორტში წასაყვანად მოგვაკითხეს, ჩვენ უკვე მზად ვიყავით და ველოდებოდით მათ. წვიმდა. პირველი წვიმა მთელი კვირის განმავლობაში! გზად აეროპორტისაკენ მადონა მეგრელიშვილმა დარეკა (დილის ხუთ საათზე!) ქუთაისიდან იმის შესამოწმებლად, თუ ყველაფერი გეგმის მიხედვით მიდიოდა. აეროპორტში, როცა მადონა ტყეშელაშვილს კიდევ ერთხელ ვუხდიდით მადლობას, ჩვენს გასაცილებლად მამუკა და ეკა მოვიდნენ, რითაც კიდევ ერთხელ გვიჩვენეს მაგალითი იმ სიკეთისა, რომელსაც ყოველთვის ამჟღავნებდნენ ჩვენს მიმართ – და იმ გამორჩეული სტუმართმოყვარეობისა, რომელსაც გვაფრქვევდა ყველა, ვისაც კი შევხვდით ამ ერთი კვირის მანძილზე.

ვიმედოვნებთ, რომ ჩვენი ვიზიტის ეს ანგარიში მცირედ მაინც აღწერს იმ გასაოცარ თბილ მიღებას ქუთაისში და, რაოდენ მნიშვნელოვანია ეს კავშირი ჩვენ ქალაქებს შორის. ამ მოკლე ხანში ჩვენ შესაძლებლობა მოგვეცა შევხვედროდით ბევრ ძველ მეგობარს და ბევრი ახალიც შეგვეძინა. ეს იყო მხიარული და საქმიანი კვირა, როცა განვიხილეთ ჩვენ ქალაქებს შორის მეგობრობის კავშირის გაძლიერებისა და გაღრმავების საშუალებები. უკან დავბრუნდით მიწვევის წერილით, რომელიც ქუთაისის მერმა, გიორგი თევდორაძემ გაუგზავნა ნიუპორტის მერს, ბილ ლანგსფორდს და მის მეუღლეს, სიუს,რომ მომავალ მაისში ქუთაისს ეწვიონ.

მოუთმენლად ველით როდის წარვსდგებით ამ მოხსენებით ნიუპორტი ქუთაისის ასოციაციის წევრებთან, რათა ერთად გულმოდგინეთ ვიმუშაოთ, რომ მივაღწიოთ იმ პროექტების განხორციელებას, რომლებიც ამ ვიზიტის დროს შემოგვთავაზეს.

Fearful that the hotel staff would forget to call us at four a.m., none of us slept and we were ready and waiting when Madona T and her icon painting driver collected us and drove us to the airport in the rain – the first rain we had seen all week. On the way, Madonna M phoned from Kutaisi to check that all her arrangements were being followed (at five o’clock in the morning!) When we were at the airport and about to thank Madona T one last time before going through to the departure lounge, Mamuka, Eka and Mata arrived to help see us off, a typical example of the kindness they always show us -and of the outstanding hospitality that had been showered on us by everyone we met throughout the week.

We hope this Report conveys something of the amazingly warm welcome we received during our visit and the importance of the twinning link in Kutaisi. We had the chance to meet many old friends and make many new ones and the week was full of fun and interest. We held a series of discussions on ways to reinforce the friendship between our two cities and returned with an invitation from the Kutaisi Mayor Giorgi Tevdoradze to the Mayor of Newport Bill Langsford and his wife Sue, together with Sonia, to visit Kutaisi next May.

We now look forward to reporting back to NKTA members and working with them and KNIA members to achieve many of the projects proposed during the visit.

დიდი ბრიტანეთის საელჩოს წარმომადგენელთა ვიზიტი ქუთაისში უკვე ტრადიაციად იქცა. ყოველი ახალი ელჩი აუცილებლად სტუმრობს ქვეყნის მეორე ქალაქს და გამორჩეულად კარგი შთაბეჭდილებით ტოვებს მას, რაც ვფიქრობთ სხვა ფაქტორებთან ერთად გარვეულწილად ქუთაისსა და ნიუპორტს შორის არსებული მჭიდრო ურთიერთკავშირითაც არის განპირობებული. სწორედ, ამ მეგობრობის წყალობით ბრიტანელი სტუმრები ყველაზე ჩვეული და ახლობელია ჩვენი თანაქალაქელებისათვის. მიმდინარე წელს კი ამ ვიზიტთა დამაგვირგვინებელი გახლდათ დიდი ბრიტანეთის სრულუფლებიანი ელჩის მისი აღმატებულება ჯუდიტ გოფის სტუმრობა ქუთაისში.

ელჩის მიღების ერთდღიანი განრიგი მრავალრიცხოვანი ღონისძიებებით იყო დატვირთული. პროგრამა აკაკი წერეთლის სახელმწიფო უნივერსიტეტში ვიზიტით დაიწყო. ბრიტანეთის ელჩი შეხვდა უნივერსიტეტის რექტორს პროფესორ გიორგი ღავთაძეს და პროფესორ-მასწავლებლებს. შეხვედრა საინტერესო ვითარებაში წარიმართა. ქ-ნ ჯუდიტ გოფი გაეცნო უნივერსიტეტში არსებულ მდგომარეობას, მიმდინარე რეფორმებსა და სამომავლო გეგმებს.

ბუნებრივია, ელჩი ესტუმრა ქუთაისი-ნიუპორტის საერთაშორისო ასოციაციის ოფისს, სადაც ასოციაციის წევრებმა მისი თავმჯდომარის, ქალბატონ მადონა მეგრელიშვილის ხელმძღვანელობით სპეციალური მიღება მოუწყვეს მეგობარი ქვეყნის საპატიო წარმომადგენელს. ქ-მა ჯუდიტ გოფმა დაათვალიერა ორი ქალაქის მეგობრობის ამსახველი ფოტო-მასალა, გაეცნო ასოციაციის საქმიანობას, შეხვდა მის წევრებს- საზოგადოების სხვადასხვა სფეროს წარმომადგენლებს. აღსანიშნავია, რომ აქვე მოეწყო როტარი კლუბის წარდგენა. აღნიშნული კლუბი ასოციაციის მხარდაჭერით ახლახანს ჩამოყალიბდა და იგი აერთიანებს ბიზნესმენთა ჯგუფს, რომელთაც თავიანთი სამოქმედო გეგმა და პრიორიტეტული პროექტები გააცნეს ბრიტანელ სტუმრებს. შეხვედრა საკმაოდ წარმომადგენლობითი იყო და საქმიან ხასიათს ატარებდა. გამოიხტა მომავლი თანამშრომლობისათვის მზაობა და ორმხრივი კეთილგანწყობა.

შემდეგ ოფიციალური მიღება გაიმართა ქალაქის სამთავრობო ადმინისტრაციაში. შეხვედრას ესწრებოდნენ იმერეთის სახელმწიფო რწმუნებული – გუბერნატორი ბ-ნი ლაშა მაქაცარია, ვიცე გუბერნატორი გიგა შუშანია, ქალაქის მერი ბ-ნი გიორგი თევდორაძე, ქალაქის საკრებულოს თავმჯდომარე ბატონი ამირან ხვადაგიანი და ადმინისტრაციის წარმომადგენლები.

ბრიტანეთის ელჩი უკეთ გაეცნო რეგიონისა და ქალაქის მნიშვნელობასა და როლს ქვეყნის განვითარებაში, გაიზიარა სამომავლო მიზნები და ამოცანები. შეხვედრაზე კვლავ ხაზი გაესვა ქართულ-ბრიტანულ მეგობრულ კავშირებს და მეგობრობის იმ უნიკალურ მოდელს, რასაც ქუთაისისა და ნიუპორტის კავშირი წარმოადგენს.

მიუხედავად თავისი დატვირთული პროგრამისა ელჩს საშუალება მიეცა დაეთვალიერებინა ქალაქის ცენტრი და ნიუპორტის ქუჩაზე გაესეირნებინა. ქალაქში მიმდინარე სარეკონსტრუქციო სამუშაოებმა და ნიუპორტის ქუჩის მდებარეობამ დადებითი შთაბეჭდილება მოახდინა ქ-ნ ჯუდიტ გოფზე.

ბრიტანეთის ელჩი მოკლე დროით სტუმრობდა ქუთაისს, მაგრამ მასთან შეხვედრა სხვადასხვა პროფესიის მოქალაქეებმა შეძლეს. მათ შორის თითქმის ყველა არასამთავრობო ორგანიზაციის წარმომადგენლებმა და კლინიკის L&J ექიმებმა.

ვიმედოვნებთ, ბრიტანეთის ელჩის ეს მეტად საინტერესო გაცნობითი ვიზიტი მომავალი მჭიდრო და ნაყოფიერი ურთიერთობის დასაბამი იქნება.

Visits of the representatives of the British Embassy to Kutaisi have already become a good tradition. All Her Majesty’s Ambassadors have visited the second city of Georgia, Kutaisi and have retuned to Tbilisi having very special memories of it. This, at least partly, may be due to close links of friendship between Kutaisi and Newport.It is this friendship that made every arrival of British guests a familiar and, certainly, a most welcome event. Undoubtedly one of the features of this year was the visit by the new British Ambassador Ms. Judith Gough.

Naturally, a visit to the Kutaisi Newport International Association was included in the programme too. The members of the Association headed by its chairperson Madonna Megrelishvili offered a warm welcome to the honorable guest. H.M. Ambassador Judith Gough saw photographs depicting the long history of the twinning, received detailed information on the activities of the Association, met its members and active representatives of the local community. An important aspect of this meeting was the presentation of the Rotary Club recently founded with the support of the Association. The members of the club, local businessmen, presented their action plan and priority projects to the British guests. Both sides expressed their willingness and enthusiasm for future cooperation.

HM British Ambassador also met the city authorities in the Civic Centre. The official meeting at the Mayor’s Office was attended by the Governor of the Imeti Region Mr. Lasha Makatsaria, the Deputy Governor Mr. Giga Shushania, the Mayor of Kutaisi Mr. Giorgi Tevdoradze, the Chair of the City Council Mr. Amiran Khvadagiani and other representatives of the Civic Centre. The Ambassador had an opportunity to get to know more about the Imereti region and its importance in the country development, its future aims and goals. Once again she emphasized the significance of Georgian-British links and especially the unique model of friendship between Kutaisi and Newport.

In spite of the busy itinerary H.M Ambassador managed to walk around the city centre and Newport street. Ms. Judith Gough was highly impressed with the restoration of the city centre and location of the Newport Street.

The visit by Her Majesty’s Ambassador was short but in spite of it she was able to meet people from many walks of life. Among them being NGOs representatives and doctors of the L&J clinic.

We do hope that this interesting visit by the British Ambassador will be the beginning of further future close and fruitful relationship.
