The
main aim of this visit to Kutaisi was to launch youth exchange programme
that will help young people of Kutaisi and Newport to develop their cultural
awareness of the two countries.
Although our city is used to visits of people from different walks of life,
and all of them play a great role in developing our links, we consider this
visit, a very special one as young people were actively involved in it. This
fact gives us confidence in future of our relationship. We believe that the
unique friendship between Kutaisi and Newport will never be forgotten
passing on from generation to generation.
The
delegation members became acquainted with our young people’s potential.
They had meetings at ATSU, schools No.1 and No.3, met ELC students in the
office of the Kutaisi Newport International Association. The discussion held
in the KNIA office impressed the guests so much that they kept referring to
it several times. At the end of the heated talk KNIA chairman, Mrs. Madonna
Megrelishvili presented the visitors with handmade Georgian glasses. The visits to Sulori and Vartsikhe Youth camps were arranged with the help of Kutaisi Youth Department. In these camps our guests had an opportunity to listen to young people’s opinions on their future and their view of the situation in Georgia. Peter Landers, Richard Davies and Michael Beirne also visited Sport Palace, Football and Rugby Sport Schools. Football Sport School students were handed over the uniforms sent to them by Welsh football fans. Wearing new uniforms young footballers immediately played a game for the guests who were impressed with their abilities and noted that if they had proper conditions for developing them they would have successful future. The guests were also hosted by Tsitsino Todua’s Piano Class which gave an unforgettable concert of classical music to the audience. Young winners of International Pianists’ concerts, and holders of various prestigious prizes participated in it. Our excited guests impressed with their excellent performance thanked talented students and their teacher.
Mr.
Landers and his assistants were warmly received by the Mayor of Kutaisi
Nugzar Shamugia and Council Leader, Amiran Khvadagiani. They spoke about the
advantages of the Youth Exchange Project offered by the delegation and
discussed a wide range of social and youth topics. Before leaving for London our guests departed for Tbilisi via Gori where they saw Stalin Museum and then did the sights of Tbilisi. They were greatly impressed with Georgian hospitality and traditions enjoying evening meals with Georgian families. Leaving hospitable hosts they usually would say: "Everything is wonderful. We love Kutaisi and people in Kutaisi. We love Georgia." They admitted that they had never met such hospitable people saying that they would be looking forward to coming back. Special thanks should go to the L&J Clinic in the hotel of which our guests lived while staying in Kutaisi. The doctors of the clinic contributed a lot to making the visit fruitful and enjoyable. We are really impressed with the visit by Peter Landers, Richard Davies and Michael Beirne, their determination and extremely enthusiastic and creative approach to realizing the project of exchange visits between young people of Kutaisi and Newport. We are happy to have made friends with these three wonderful representatives of YMCA. It is vitally important to bring young people of our twinned cities together by enabling them to meet frequently and exchange experience and opinions on all possible subjects to strengthen our friendship and to settle various problems of youth. Everyone knows that young people are a driving force of every nation. Their social activities of the most varied character contribute to countries’ development determining their future. That’s why the youth of today is the world of tomorrow.
We believe that exchange visits will attract youth to our twinning activities and increase our membership. Youth’s involvement is essential for maintaining close links and friendship between our peoples. Their broad outlook and participation in the Twinning is greatly valued.
And
last but not least, we are also happy that we were able to meet our guests
properly in spite of a holiday period when so many people involved are away
on holiday. It’s to Madonna’s absolute credit. Her incredible organizing
skills can do things seeming next to impossible at first. She managed to
gather people of the KNIA fortunately spending summer in Kutaisi worked out
a meticulous programme and arranged interesting events to make the guests’
visit to Kutaisi memorable. Tamta Gabisonia |
