2008 – აქტიური და წარმატებული წელი
ეს არის გასული წლის ჩვენი საქმიანობის ძალიან მოკლე ანგარიში. სამხარეო
ადმინისტრაცია და მერია უზრუნველყოფს ასოციაციას ადმინისტრაციული მხარდაჭერით,
მაგრამ ყველა სამუშაოს თავისთავზე მოხალისეები იღებენ. ჩვენს ასოციაციაში
დაახლოებით ორასამდე წევრია, რომელთაგან ბევრი თავისი სფეროს ლიდერია. ჩვენ
ვცდილობთ დამატებითი კავშირები დავამყაროთ ამ ორი ქალაქის სხვადასხვა ჯგუფებს
შორის და მხარი დავუჭიროთ მეგობრობას ინდივიდთა შორის. ჩვენს შორის აგრეთვე
ხდება თვალსაზრისთა ურთიერთგაცვლა ისეთ საკითხებზე, როგორიცაა ქალაქის
ადმინისტრაცია, განათლება, ტურიზმი, კულტურა და სხვა.
მეგობრობა დიდად წარმატებულია. ბოლო თორმეტი თვის განმავლობაში ქუთაისი–ნიუპორტის საერთაშორისო ასოციაციამ
(ქნია) ბევრ რამეს მიაღწია.
აპრილში ქუთაისს ნიუპორტიდან ანგლიკანური ეკლესიის, წმინდა ვულოსის ტაძრის
წარმომადგენელთა დელეგაცია ეწვია. მის შემადგენლობაში იყვნენ : წმინდა მამა
მარკ სოდი (მოძღვარი), ქეთრინ ჰეიმენი (ტაძრის უფროსი) და ბრაიენ კოქსი (ტაძრის
ადმინისტრატორი). გარდა იმისა, რომ დაათვალიერეს საქართველოს ბევრი უძველესი
ადგილი, მათ აგრეთვე შეხვედრები ჰქონდათ ეკლესიის ხელმძღვანელებთან, რათა
გაეღრმავებინათ ის მყარი ქრისტიანული ურთიერთობა, რაც ამ ორ ქალაქს შორის გასულ
წლებში (20 წელი)
წარმატებული იყო. წმინდა მამა მარკ სოდმა მონმაუთის ეპისკოპოსისაგან
ქრისტიანული მისალმება გადასცა ქუთათელ–გაენათელ მიტროპოლიტს კალისტრატეს.
დელეგაცია შეხვდა ქალაქ ქუთაისის მერს ბატონ ნუგზარ შამუგიას, რომელმაც მათ
ტაძარს საქართველოს მფარველი წმინდანის, წმინდა გიორგის ძვირფასი ხატი
უსახსოვრა. ბიბლიურ კვირა დღეს ნიუპორტ–ქუთაისის ასოციაციამ წმინდა ვულუს
ტაძარს საჩუქრად საქართველოში დაწერილი ევანგელისტ წმინდა ლუკას ახალი ხატი გადასცა. საჩუქრები
ამჟამად ნიუპორტში წმინდა ლუკას სამლოცველოს ამშვენებს.
აპრილის თვეში ნიუპორტში გაემგზავრა აკაკი წერეთლის სახელმწიფო უნივერსიტეტის
(აწსუ)
რექტორი პროფესორი გიორგი ონიანი და ამავე უნივერსიტეტის საგარეო ურთიერთობათა
სამსახურის უფროსი ასოცირებული პროფესორი დავით გეგეჭკორი. ამ ვიზიტის დროს
განახლდა მემორანდუმი ნიუპორტის უნივერსიტეტსა და აკაკი წერეთლის სახელმწიფო
უნივერსიტეტს შორის, რომელიც ითვალისწინებს პროფესურის გაცვლას, ერთობლივი
სამეცნიერო პროექტების განხორციელებასა და ა.შ. მემორანდუმში ცალკე პუნქტადაა
წარმოდგენილი ყოველწლიურად ერთი სტუდენტის (მაგისტრატურა) დაფინანსება, რომელიც
1991 წლიდან წარმატებით ხორციელდება ნიუპორტის უნივერსიტეტის მიერ, ქუთაისელ
სტუმრებს უელსის უნივერსიტეტთან ერთად გულთბილი მასპინძლობა გაუწია ნიუპორტი–ქუთაისის ასოციაციამ.
მაისის თვეში ნიუპორტის უნივერსიტეტის სამი დოქტორი – შელი ეგლი, სამაგისტრო
პროგრამების, ფილოსოფიისა და კრიტიკული ანალიზის საკვლევი ცენტრის დირექტორი,
ქეროლაინ მაკლარენი, ბაკალავრიატის სკოლის დირექტორი და ლინ ფაულსტონი რელიგიის
სწავლების დირექტორი ეწვია ქუთაისს ინგლისური ენის სწავლების თანამედროვე
მეთოდის - "ფილოსოფიური გამოკითხვის" - დანერგვის მიზნით. მათ ამ მეთოდით სწავლება
წარმატებულად განახორციელეს როგორც აწსუ-ს ინგლისური ენის დეპარტამენტის
მაგისტრებთან და მასწავლებლებთან, ისე ინგლისური ენის ცენტრის სტუდენტებთანაც.
ეს პროექტი ქართველ სტუდენტებთან იმდენად წარმატებული აღმოჩნდა, რომ გადაწყდა
ბრიტანელ კოლეგებთან ერთობლივი კვლევის წარმოება. ოფიციალური შეხვედრებისა და
ისტორიული ძეგლების მონახულების გარდა, ბრიტანელმა დოქტორებმა მონაწილეობა
მიიღეს ქალაქის მერიის მიერ მოწყობილ საერთო საქალაქო ზეიმში ,,ორმაისობა’’.
იგი უკვე ათეული წელია ქუთაისში ტრადიციულად აღინიშნება. რომელშიც მსოფლიოს
სხვადასხვა ქვეყნებიდან ქართული შოუბიზნესის ყველა ვარსკვლავი მონაწილეობდა.
ივნისში ქუთაისს სტუმრობდა გუენტის სამეფო საავადმყოფოს ექიმთა დელეგაცია,
რომლის შემადგენლობაში იყვნენ ჯონ დეივისი, კარდეოლოგი, სტეფან ჰანტერი,
გუენტის ჯანდაცვის სამედიცინო ცენტრის დირექტორი, ფსიქიატრი და ბრაიენ
სტეფენსონი, ქირურგი. ისინი გაეცვნენ და მაღალი შეფასება მისცეს “L&J’’-სა და
,,ბომონდის’’ (Beau Monde) კლინიკებს როგორც აპარატურის, ისე პროფესიონალიზმის
თვალსაზრისით. საეკლესიო საავადმყოფოში კმაყოფილი დარჩნენ ექიმთა დონით, მაგრამ
არ მოიწონეს კლინიკის ტექნიკური აღჭურვილობა. ოფიციალური შეხვედრების,
ისტორიული ძეგლების, მუზეუმებისა და საინტერესო ადგილების მონახულების გარდა,
მათ ქუთაისელ ექიმებთან ჩაატარეს სიმპოზიუმი, რომელიც მაღალ დონეზე წარიმართა და ქართველ ექიმთა დიდი ინტერესი გამოიწვია.
ამ ვიზიტს მოჰყვა ნიუპორტიდან ექიმთა ვრცელი ანგარიში როგორც ქუთაისისა და
საქართველოს ჯანდაცვის სფეროს შეფასებებით, ისე სამომავლო გეგმებით.
აგვისტოს თვეში საქართველოს სტუმრობდა ნიუპორტი-ქუთაისის ასოციაციის
თავმჯდომარე ქეთრინ ფილფოტი, რომელსაც მასპინძლობდა ქნია-ს აქტიური წევრების ილია და მეგი მანდარიების ოჯახი. მან მოინახულა
ქნია-ს ასოციაციის ოფისი და შეხვდა ასოციაციის რამდენიმე წევრს.
ჩვენმა ასოციაციამ ახალი სასწავლო წელი წარმატებულად დაიწყო. ასოციაციის
აქტიური წევრი, აწსუ-ს ინგლისური ენის დეპარტამენტის მასწავლებელი ნათია
სოფრომაძე გაზაფხულზე მიწვეული იყო ინგლისური, როგორც უცხოური ენის
მასწავლებელთა საერთაშორისო ასოციაციის ((IATFL) 42-ე ყოველწლიურ
კონფერენციაზე, რათა ინტერნეტით გაეშუქებინა კონფერენციის მსვლელობა. წელს კი
ჩივნინგისა და სოროსის ერთობლივი პროექტით სწავლას განაგრძობს მაგისტრის
აკადემიური ხარისხის მოსაპოვებლად ვორიკის უნივერსიტეტში (დიდი ბრიტანეთი).
ასოციაციის მეორე ყველაზე ახალგაზრდა წევრმა, ინგლისური ენის ცენტრის
კურსდამთავრებულმა, კემბრიჯის პირველი სერთიფიკატის პირველმა მფლობელმა
დასავლეთ საქართველოში, ლევან სოფრომაძემ,
წარმატებით ჩააბარა ეროვნული გამოცდები და რეიტინგით პირველი ადგილი დაიკავა
მთელს საქართველოში. იგი ახლა სწავლას განაგრძობს თბილისის სამედიცინო
უნივერსიტეტში. მას ამ წარმატებისათვის მაგთიკომისაგან 1000
ლარი, ბალის
სიმ-ბარათები ოქროს ნომრითა და საპატიო სიგელი გადაეცა.
სექტემბრის თვეშივე ნიუპორტში ხუთმა მეხანძრემ – გია რაზმაძემ, კახა მუმლაძემ,
ბესო ნებიერიძემ, ზურაბ ცერცვაძემ და გიგა ბრეგაძემ პროფესიული ტრენინგები,
პრაქტიკული და თეორიული მეცადინეობები სახანძრო-სამაშველო პროფილით გაიარა. მათ
თარჯიმნობდა აწსუ-ს ინგლისური ენის დეპარტამენტის მასწავლებელი კობა ლომიძე. ეს
ვიზიტი ორგანიზებული იყო უელსის პარლამენტის ვიცე-სპიკერის როზმარი ბატლერის
მიერ, რადგან ეს სამსახური პარლამენტზეა დაქვემდებარებული. ქუთაისელმა
მეხანძრეებმა, პროფესიულადაც და პიროვნულადაც, მასპინძლებზე წარუშლელი
შთაბეჭდილება დატოვეს, რისი დასტურიც ბრიტანელების მიერ გამოგზავნილი მადლობის
ბარათებია. ნიუპორტელებმა მათ საჩუქრად გადასცეს უსაფრთხოების მოწყობილობა
(მეხანძრეთა ფორმები, ჩაფხუტები და ჩექმები), სულ 30000 დოლარის ღირებულების.
სექტემბრის თვეში სასულიერო სფეროს წარმომადგენელთა საპასუხო ვიზიტი შედგა.
ქუთაისიდან ნიუპორტში გაემგზავრა გელათის სასულიერო აკადემიის ლექტორი,
გაენათის ეპარქიის საინფორმაციო სამსახურის უფროსი, ისტორიკოსი ლევან
ტყეშელაშვილი, რომელსაც თარჯიმნობდა კობა ლომიძე. მათ საშუალება მიეცათ ახლოს
გაცნობოდნენ როგორც ანგლიკანური ტაძრებისა და ეკლესიების, ისე ბრიტანული
ციხე-კოშკების ისტორიას. გარდა საინტერესო სანახაობებისა (ლონდონი, ბრისტოლი,
კარდიფი, ბრეკონი, ჩეპსტოუ), მათ მეტად მნიშვნელოვანი შეხვედრები ჰქონდათ
მონმაუთის ეპისკოპოს დომინიკთან, უელსის პარლამენტში ვიცე სპიკერთან ქალბატონ
როზმარი ბატლერთან და ასკმაუსის როტარი კლუბის პრეზიდენტ ბატონ ლინ ოულმენთან.
ქუთაისში მეთიუ ლიპმანის ფილოსოფიური გამოკითხვის მეთოდის წარმატებული
დანერგვის შემდეგ, ნიუპორტელებმა გადაწყვიტეს ქართველ კოლეგებთან ერთობლივი
პრეზენტაციის გაკეთება CARN-ის ყოველწლიურ კონფერენციაზე, რომელიც წელს
7-9 ნოემბერს ლივერპულში ჩატარდა. ქუთაისიდან აწსუ-ს რექტორის გადაწყვეტილებით ნიუპორტში გაიგზავნა ამავე
უნივერსიტეტის ინგლისური ენის დეპარტამენტის ხელმძღვანელი ეკა თოფურია, ხოლო
ქუთაისი-ნიუპორტის საერთაშორისო ასოციაციისა და ინგლისური ენის ცენტრის
გამგეობათა ერთობლივი გადაწყვეტილებით შეირჩა ზინაიდა ჩაჩანიძე, რომელმაც დიდი
მუშაობა გასწია (ექსპერიმენტული გაკვეთილები აწსუ-სა და ინგლისური ენის
ცენტრში, მასალების შეგროვება, ინგლისელი კოლეგების მიერ დატოვებული მეთოდური
ლიტერატურის შესწავლა და მათი გაცნობა სტუდენტებისათვის, მუშაობის პროცესში
სტუდენტებზე დაკვირვება და ა.შ.). 11-12 ნოემბერს ქართველმა სპეციალისტებმა
ნიუპორტის უნივერსიტეტში გაიარეს აგრეთვე ტრენინგი P4C, რომელსაც ატარებდა
ქარენ მერისი. მასპინძლებმა, ნიუპორტი-ქუთაისის ასოციაციის წევრებმა ქართველ
სტუმრებს დიდი ბრიტანეთის ღირსშესანიშნაობანიც დაათვალიერებინეს.
12 ნოემბერს ქუთაისს უელსის პარლამენტის ვიცე-სპიკერი, ქუთაისის საპატიო
მოქალაქე, ქუთაისი-ნიუპორტის საერთაშორისო ასოციაციის საპატიო წევრი ქალბატონი
როზმარი ბატლერი ეწვია. იგი შეხვდა იმერეთის რეგიონის გუბერნატორს ბატონ მიხეილ
ჩოგოვაძესა და ქალაქის მერს ბატონ ნუგზარ შამუგიას. მათ ისაუბრეს დაწყებული
პროექტების გაგრძელების შესახებ , კერძოდ მეხანძრეებზე, ექიმებზე, პოლიციელებზე,
აგრეთვე მომავალ ერთობლივ ბიზნეს პროექტებზე
და ა.შ. ქალბატონი როზმარი ეწვია აწსუ-ს და
ჩაატარა ინტერაქციული ლექცია სტუდენტებით გადაჭედილ მწვანე დარბაზში. ვიზიტის
საკმაოდ დატვირთული განრიგი ასევე მოიცავდა სტუმრობას YMCA-სა (ახალგაზრდების
ქრისტიანული ასოციაცია) და LDA-ში (ადგილობრივი დემოკრატიის სააგენტო).
ქალბატონ როზმარი ბატლერს საშუალება მიეცა მოენახულებინა ქალაქის ახალი სავაჭრო
ცენტრი ,,ქარვასლა” და მიმდებარე ქუჩების სარეკონსტრუქციო სამუშაოები. ვიზიტის
ბოლო აკორდი იყო ქუთაისი-ნიუპორტის საერთაშორისო ასოციაციის ოფისი და შეხვედრა
ასოციაციის წევრებთან – ძველ მეგობრებთან, რომელსაც ოფიციალური პირებიც
ესწრებოდნენ.
ნოემბერსა და დეკემბრის თვეში ქუთაისს სტუმრობდა ცნობილი იურისტი, პროფესორი
მინდია უგრეხელიძე. მან აწსუს სამართალმცოდნეობის სტუდენტთათვის ადამიანის
უფლებათა დაცვის შესახებ წაიკითხა ლექცია. ეწვია ახალგაზრდა იურისტთა
ასოციაციას, სადაც შედგა უაღრესად საინტერესო დიალოგი იურისპუდენციის
საკითხებზე. ბატონმა მინდია უგრეხელიძემ ასევე უმასპინძლა დიდი ბრიტანეთის
ელჩსა და მის მეუღლეს ბატონ დენის კიფსა და ქალბატონ ქეით კიფს
ქუთაისი-ნიუპორტის საერთაშორისო ასოციაციის ოფისსა და ინგლისური ენის ცენტრში,
რომელიც მის მამაპაპურ სახლშია განთავსებული.
12 დეკემბერს ქუთაისს ეწვია დიდი ბრიტანეთის სრულუფლებიანი ელჩი საქართველოში,
მისი აღმატებულება დენის კიფი მეუღლესთან ქეით კიფთან ერთად. საპატიო
სტუმარი მიიღეს იმერეთის რეგიონის გუბერნატორმა ბატონმა მიხეილ ჩოგოვაძემ,
ქალაქის მერმა ბატონმა ნუგზარ შამუგიამ და საკრებულოს თავმჯდომარემ ბატონმა
ამირან ხვადაგიანმა. ბრიტანეთის ელჩმა ქუთაისის მერს ნიუპორტის მერის
გამოგზავნილი ბარათი გადასცა. სერ დენის კიფი აგრეთვე ეწვია აწსუ-ს (სადაც ინტერაქტიული ლექცია ჩაატარა), ქუთაისის
სახელმწიფო ისტორიულ მუზეუმს, ქუთაისი-ნიუპორტის საერთაშორისო ასოციაციას,
რომელსაც მან უნიკალური მეგობრობის ნიმუში უწოდა. ელჩმა აგრეთვე მოინახულა
ბაგრატის ტაძარი და გელათის მონასტერი, სადაც ქუთათელ-გაენათელ მიტროპოლიტს
მეუფე კალისტრატეს შეხვდა. საღამოს კი ტელეკომპანია "რიონის" დღის ეთერში 40
წუთი ისაუბრა ქართულად.
ქართველოლოგიის დღე ამჯერად 15 ნოემბერს ბრისტოლის უნივერსიტეტში გაიმართა,
თბილისს – ბრისტოლის მეგობრობის 20 წლისთავის აღსანიშნავად. ნიუპორტ-ქუთაისის
ასოციაცია წარმოდგენილი იყო 13 წევრით. დოქტორმა თამარ დრაგაძემ როგორც
ქართველოლოგიის დღის ორგანიზატორმა და სხდომის თავმჯდომარემ კონფლიქტის დროს
დაღუპულთ ერთწუთიანი დუმილით პატივი მიაგო. შეხვედრის მონაწილეებს მიესალმენ
ბრისტოლის ლორდმერი ქრის დეივისი, ბრისტოლის საკრებულოს თავჯდომარე, თბილისის
ვიცე მერი, რომლებმაც ბრისტოლ – თბილისის 20 წლიანი მეგობრობის მანძილზე
მიღწეულ წარმატებებზე ილაპარაკეს. სესიაზე სიტყვით გამოვიდა ნიუპორტ-ქუთაისის
ასოციაციის თავჯდომარე ქეთრინ ფილფოტი, რომელმაც წარმატებული 2008
წლის ანგარიში წარმოადგინა ფოტოების ილუსტრირებით, რომელიც ქუთაისელ მეხანძრეთა
ტრენინგებს ასახავდა.
დეკემბრის ბოლოს ძმები ვიტალი და კოტე სიმსივეები – აკაკი წერეთლის სახელმწიფო
უნივერსიტეტის კურსდამთავრებულები სტუმრობდნენ ქუთაისს. უნივერსიტეტის დამთავრების
შემდეგ ვიტალიმ სწავლა განაგრძო ნიუპორტის უნივერსიტეტში ინფორმაციული
ტექნოლოგიების მაგისტრის აკადემიური ხარისხის მოსაპოვებლად. კოტე კი წარმატებით
მუშაობდა სხვადასხვა საერთაშორისო ორგანიზაციებში როგორც ეკონომისტი. ამჟამად
ძმები ცხოვრობენ პრაღაში, სადაც მათ საკუთარი ფირმა აქვთ, რომელიც ინტერნეტის
პროგრამებით მომსახურებას უზრუნველყოფს. მათ უკვე მოიხვეჭეს სახელი როგორც
ევროპაში, ისე აშშ-ში.
მიმდინარე წლის სექტემბრიდან ასოციაციამ დაიწყო ჟურნალ

დიდი დრო დაუთმეს მოვლენათა დაგეგმარებასა და ორგანიზირებას, პროექტთა
განვითარებასა და დანერგვას, რათა გაძლიერდეს კავშირები და გაღრმავდეს
მეგობრობა ქალაქ ნიუპორტსა და ნიუპორტ-ქუთაისის ასოციაციასთან.
ამ წელს ყველანი ერთად მოუთმენლად ველით ჩვენი თანამშრომლობის წარმატებული
საქმიანობის გაგრძელებას.

2008 – An Active and Successful Year
This is a very brief account of our activities over the
past year. Regional administration and Civic
Centre provide us with administrative support, but all the main work is
undertaken by volunteers. We have around two hundred members, many of whom
are leaders in their fields. We try to establish links between different
groups in the two cities and support individual friendships. We also
exchange views on many issues such as civic administration, education,
tourism, cultural and other matters.
The Twinning is very successful. Quite a lot has been
achieved by the Kutaisi – Newport International Association in the last
twelve months.
In April, a delegation of Anglican church leaders from
Newport’s St. Woolos Cathedral consisting of Fr. Mark Soady (Minor Canon),
Catherine Hayman (Warden) and Brian Cox (Cathedral Administrator) visited
Kutaisi. The purpose of their visit was to re-establish the close
relationship between the Christian churches in Kutaisi and Newport that was
first formed almost twenty years ago. As well as following a busy
social programme, including visits to Bagrati Cathedral, the Gelati
Monastery complex and other religious centres, they held friendly
discussions with the leaders of the city’s Georgian Orthodox Church during
which Fr Mark Soady conveyed Christian greetings to Metropolitan Kalistrate
from the Bishop of Monmouth. The delegation also met the Mayor
of Kutaisi, Mr. Nugzar Shamugia, who presented the visitors with a precious
icon of St. George, the Patron Saint of Georgia. In 2007 the
Newport–Kutaisi Twinning Association presented St Woolos Cathedral with an
icon of St Luke the Evangelist which members had commissioned during a
visit to Georgia. These two splendid icons, both painted in Georgia, now
hang together in the Cathedral’s St Luke’s Chapel.

The Rector of Akaki Tsereteli State University (ATSU),
Professor Giorgi Oniani, and the Head of the University’s Department of
Foreign Relations, Associate Professor David Gegechkori, visited the
University of Wales Newport (UWN) in April. In addition to
strengthening the ties of friendship and co-operation between the Newport
and Kutaisi Universities that date back to 1991, the purpose of the visit
was to sign a new Memorandum of Understanding between the two Universities.
The Memorandum provides for one student from the ATSU to study at the
UWN free from any course fees each year and provides a similar opportunity
for a Newport based student to study in Kutaisi. It also encourages
lecturer exchange schemes and the planning of joint projects. The guests
from Kutaisi were warmly welcomed by both the staff at the UWN and members
of the Newport–Kutaisi Association (NKA).
Three senior members of the teaching staff at UWN, the Director of MA
Programmes and the Research Centre for Philosophy & Critical Enquiry, Dr
Shirley Egley, the Director of UG Education & Linked Named Awards in the
School of Education, Caroline McLachlin and the Director of Religious
Studies, Lynn Foulston arrived in Kutaisi to introduce one of the latest
methods of the teaching of English entitled `Philosophical Enquiry`.
Philosophical Enquiry was pioneered by the educationalist Mathew Lipman and
takes account of the development of critical and logical thinking among
children from an early age. The visitors presented a series of lectures both
to the University’s MA students and staff and to the students at the English
Language Centre. The lectures proved so successful that it was decided
to conduct further joint research into this new method of teaching the
English language. The guests participated in many formal meetings but also
had time to visit local sights of interest and participate in the local
holiday `Ormaisoba` in which many celebrities from Georgian show business
took part.
Other recent guests from Newport include three doctors
from the city’s Royal Gwent Hospital, Dr John Davies, Consultant Physician
(Cardiology), Dr Brian Stephenson, Consultant General Surgeon with a special
interest in GI and hernia repairs and Dr Stephen Hunter, Medical Director of
the Gwent Healthcare Trust and Consultant Psychiatrist. The doctors visited
the L&J and Beau Monde clinics and after a thorough inspection they praised
the professional expertise and medical equipment to be found in both medical
centres. They also inspected the Church Hospital and while commenting
on its dedicated and highly qualified medical staff they noted with regret
that the hospital’s building and medical equipment was seriously outdated.
The doctors also conducted an interactive presentation session which
aroused a great deal of interest amongst their Georgian colleagues. During
their short stay in Kutaisi, the visitors took part in formal meetings with
the city’s administrators, visited local places of interest and enjoyed a
busy social programme with members of the KNIA. On their return to Newport
they gave the NKA an account of all aspects of their visit including a
summary of the condition of medical provision in Kutaisi and their plans for
further cooperation with their Georgian colleagues.
Catherine Philpott, Chair of the NKA, visited Kutaisi in
August on a private visit. She was hosted by Ilia and Maggie Mandaria,
active members of the KNIA. During her stay Mrs Philpott visited the Kutaisi
– Newport International Association’s office and met several members.
 Last spring one of KNIA’s most active members, Natia
Sopromadze, a teacher in ATSU’s English Language Department, was invited to
cover online the 42nd Annual International Conference of IATFL ( The
International Association of Teachers of English as a Foreign
Language). She has since won a highly competitive scholarship funded jointly
by the Chevening Programme and the Soros Foundation and as a result Natia is
currently undertaking a Masters degree at Warwick University.
 There
was also exciting academic success for the youngest member of the KNIA,
Levan Sopromadze. Levan has a sound knowledge of the English
language and he was the first student from Western Georgia to pass the
Cambridge First Certificate Examination in English. As he headed the list of
best applicants for the National Examinations in Georgia, Levan was admitted
to Tbilisi Medical University. He was also awarded Bali visa cards to a
value of 1000 lari, a Bali SIM card with golden numbers and a Diploma by
MagtiCom.
Five Kutaisi firefighters, Gia Razmadze, Kakha Mumladze,
Beso Nebieridze, Zurab Tsertsvadze and Giga Bregadze, travelled to Newport
to undertake a week’s training in firefighting as guests of the South Wales
Fire Service. Koba Lomidze, a lecturer in English at ATSU, attended as
the firemen’s translator. This initiative was organised by Rosemary Butler
AM as the fire service in Wales is administered by the National Assembly for
Wales. The visiting firemen’s enthusiasm, proficiency and friendliness made
such a deep impression on their Newport colleagues that it was noted in all
the letters they brought back to Kutaisi. Thanks to the generosity of
the South Wales Fire Service, each fireman was given a full set of
protection clothing and equipment worth in all approximately $30,000.
In September there was a return visit of religious
representatives when Levan Tkeshelashvili, historian, lecturer and Head of
Information at the Gelati Theological Academy left for Newport. After
acting as the firemen’s interpreter, Koba Lomidze stayed on in Newport to
interpret for Levan. Accompanied by their hosts, Mr and Mrs Brian Cox, Fr
Mark Soady and Catherine Hayman, they became acquainted with numerous
cathedrals and churches as well as castles and other places of interest and
visited many towns and cities including London, Bristol, Cardiff, Chepstow
and Brecon. They had interesting meetings with the Bishop of Monmouth,
the Deputy Presiding Officer of the National Assembly for Wales, Mrs
Rosemary Butler AM and the President of the Rotary Club, Uskmouth Branch, Mr
Lyn Oelman.
After successfully introducing the educational method of
Philosophical Enquiry to students during their stay in Kutaisi, Dr Shirley
Egley, Caroline McLachlan and Lynn Foulston made a joint presentation on the
subject to the annual CARN Conference held in Liverpool from 7-9 November.
As a result of a decision taken by the Rector of the ATSU, the Head of the
English Language Department, Eka Topuria, was encouraged to travel to
Britain to take part in the conference and following, a decision by the
Boards of the KNIA and the English Language Centre, a second teacher of
English, Zinaida Chachanidze was selected. This was in recognition of
the large amount of work undertaken by Zinaida in which she has developed
the teaching methods in places at the ATSU and the English Language Centre,
including much experimental class work and extensive research. On 11th and
12th November the two Georgian teachers had training in advanced computing
from UWN lecturer Karin Murris at the University’s Allt-Yr-Yn Campus. The
members of the NKA and the University staff organised a full social
programme which kept the visitors busy during their spare time.
On the 11th and 12th November, Mrs. Rosemary Butler AM
made a short visit to Kutaisi. This followed two days in Tbilisi where
she was the main speaker at a conference organized by the British Council
for women parliamentarian from Georgia, Armenia and Azerbaijan. Rosemary
Butler is an Honorary Citizen of Kutaisi and an Honorary Member of the KNIA,
and the Regional Administrator, the Governor Mr. Mikheil Chogovadze and
Mayor of Kutaisi, Mr. Nugzar Shamugia, were pleased to welcome our honoured
guest. During the official reception, future plans for collaboration between
Newport and Kutaisi were discussed including the exchange of firefighters,
doctors and, policemen as well as possible joint business projects.
Mrs. Butler visited the ATSU and gave an interactive lecture in the Green
Hall, which was crowded by students. Her busy schedule also included
meetings in the local branches of the Young Men’s Christian Association
(YMCA) and the Local Democracy Agency (LDA). She had an opportunity to visit
the newly built shopping mall “Karvasla” and saw some of the reconstruction
work currently underway in the streets of Kutaisi. Mrs. Butler also
met the firefighters at their headquarters and visited the office of KNIA.
The final and most relaxed part of her visit consisted of an
evening party attended by members of the KNIA, many of them old friends of
Rosemary’s, together with a range of prominent local people.
In November and December, Kutaisi received a visit from
Professor Mindia Ugrekhelidze, an internationally known Georgian lawyer.
Back in his home city, the Professor gave a lecture on Human Rights
Protection to law students at ATSU and visited the Young Lawyers Association
where he had a very interesting dialogue on jurisprudence issues with its
members. While in Kutaisi, a meeting was organized between Professor
Ugrekhelidze and His Excellency Mr Dennis Keefe, the British Ambassador to
Georgia, and his wife Mrs. Kate Keefe. The meeting took place in the
house which is used both as the offices of the KNIA and the premises of the
English Language Centre. The house belongs to Professor Mindia Ugrekhelidze.
The visit by the British Ambassador Mr. Keefe and Mrs.
Keefe took place on December 12th. The honoured guests were received
by the Governor of the Imereti Region, Mr. Micheil Chogovadze, the Mayor of
Kutaisi, Mr. Nugzar Shamugia and the Chairman of the City Council, Mr.
Amiran Khvadagiani. The Ambassador presented Mr. Nugzar Shamugia with
a letter of greetings from Councillor Noel Trigg, the Mayor of Newport. As
part of his visit, Mr. Keefe visited ATSU where he gave a most interesting
lecture to students. His itinerary also included a visit to the
Kutaisi State History Museum and later he met and talked with
representatives of the KNIA. He was greatly impressed with the activities of
the Association and stated that the links of friendship between the people
of Kutaisi and Newport were, in his experience, unique. The Ambassador
also visited Bagrati Cathedral and Gelati Monastery where he met
Metropolitan Kalistrate. In the evening he spoke for 40 minutes, live
and in the Georgian language, on the local television channel ‘Rioni’.
The Georgian Studies Day, an annual event in Britain, took place on November
15th in the Wills Memorial Building of Bristol University as part of the
Bristol–Tbilisi Association’s celebration of twenty years of twinning.
Thirteen members of the NKA attended the event, the 21st of its kind.
Dr.Tamar Dragadze, the GSD Convener and Chair for the day, led a minute’s
silence for victims of the recent conflict in Georgia. Cllr Chris Davies,
the Lord Mayor of Bristol together with the Leader of Bristol City Council and the Deputy Mayor of
Tbilisi, welcomed the participants. They spoke about the success achieved in
the course of the twenty year friendship between Tbilisi and Bristol. During
the conference, Catherine Philpott, Chair of the KNA, gave an account of
what had been a very full and successful year for the Newport based
Association and illustrated her talk with many photographs, including
pictures taken during the firemen’s training visit.
In December the brothers Vitali and Kote Simsive, both
graduates of the ATSU, visited Kutaisi. After graduating in Kutaisi, Vitali
continued his studies in Newport where he specialised in Information
Technology. Following his studies in Kutaisi, Kote had a successful career
as an economist in various international organizations. Presently the
brothers are living in Prague where they run their own firm which provides
programmes for the Internet. They have already won excellent reputations for
themselves in both in Europe and America.
Since September 2008 the Kutaisi-Newport International
Association has been producing a newsletter online. Its initiator and main
author is Koba Lomidze, an active member of the Executive Committee of the
