The educational centre of high qualification and professionalism - the Department of English Philology, the oldest and largest one at Akaki Tsereteli State University, is one of the widely recognised centres of English language learning in Georgia and Europe.
The Department of English Philology is the only one in Georgia which implemented a European dimension in education and training which is executed by carrying out module-based language teaching.

The Department of English Philology has long-standing close links with the Universities of Great Britain (Newport, South Wales) and the USA (Columbia, Missouri). The collaboration with these universities which greatly contributes to raising teaching standards is one of the Department’s priorities.
დეპარტამენტის სასწავლო-სამეცნიერო მუშაობის მაღალი დონის მაჩვენებელია ისიც, რომ მან რეცენზირება გაუკეთა ოქსფორდის უნივერსიტეტის პრესის (Oxford University Press) მიერ გამოშვებულ ყველაზე პოპულარულ ინგლისური ენის სახელმძღვანელოს - HEADWAY, რომლითაც სწავლება ქვეყნის მასშტაბით პირველად აქ დაინერგა. რეცენზია გადაეგზავნა ოქსფორდის გამომცემლობას და იქვე გამოქვეყნდა. ინგლისური ფილოლოგიის დეპარტამენტი ხშირადაა ინიციატორი მრავალი მნიშვნელოვანი წამოწყების, რომლებიც შემდგომ ინერგება უნივერსიტეტის სასწავლო პროცესში.
As an indicator of the quality of academic and research work conducted in the Department we could cite the review of HEADWAY, published by Oxford University Press, the publisher of this extremely successful ELT course book. It should be mentioned that the EPD was the first in the country to introduce this course book into the curriculum. Generally, such an attitude to novelty is characteristic of the EPD. It has often acted as an initiator of teaching innovations that were later adopted by the University.

For implementing up-to-date methods of teaching the English language and literature and sharing its experience, the Department does the following:

▪ Sends academic staff of the Department to Great Britain and the USA to upgrade qualification in scientific and practical fields.
▪ The Department receives a gift subscription to the newspaper The GUARDIAN WEEKLY and the journals:

1995 წლიდან იფდ-ში ფუნქციობდა ასპირანტურა ინგლისურ ანგლისტიკაში. დეპარტამენტში ფილოლოგიის მეცნიერებათა კანდიდატის ხარისხის მოსაპოვებლად საკვალიფიკაციო შრომაზე 23 ასპირანტი მუშაობდა. მათ შორის იყვნენ ივანე ჯავახიშვილის სახელმწიფო უნივერსიტეტიდან, ილია ჭავჭავაძის სახელმწიფო უნივერსიტეტიდან, შოთა რუსთაველის ბათუმის სახელმწიფო უნივერსიტეტიდან და სოხუმის სახელმწიფო უნივერსიტეტიდან.
2009 წლიდან დეპარტამენტი მუშაობს სადოქტორო პროგრამაზე სპეციალობით „კონტრასტული ლინგვისტიკა“, მისანიჭებელი ხარისხი ფილოლოგიის დოქტორი (PHD) ლინგვისტიკაში. იგი უაღრესად წარმატებული პროგრამაა ქვეყნის მასშტაბით, რასაც განაპირობებს საქართველოს სახელოვან ენათმეცნიერთა ჩართულობა მის მუშაობაში.
Since 1995 the Department ran a postgraduate course in English Linguistics course. 23 postgraduates did research into English Philology to gain a Candidate degree. Among them were researchers from Tbilisi State University, Ilia Chavchavadze State University, Shota Rustaveli Batumi State University and Sokhumi State University.
Since 2009 the English Philology Department has been running the PhD Degree Programme in “Contrastive Linguistics”,
leading to the degree in Linguistics.
Due to the active involvement of famous Georgian scholars,
it is one of the most successful national programmes.

The Department attaches a special importance to its collaboration with the Kutaisi Newport International Association (KNIA). The twinning has greatly contributed to the promotion of cultural and educational links. This successful relationship is considered a model of international friendship. The unprecedented success of the Association has greatly enhanced the work of the Department as the Department members are the main facilitators of the KNIA activities.
